Ice maker leaking water
An ice maker usually leaks because the mould is overfilling, the water is missing the mould, or a supply or drain connection is loose, and where the water shows up tells you which.
Soon A slow drip from an ice maker is rarely dangerous, but water that reaches the floor can damage flooring and cabinets, so shut off the supply valve if it spreads.
What this symptom usually means
An ice maker usually leaks because the mould is overfilling, the water is missing the mould, or a supply or drain connection is loose, and where the water shows up tells you which. Water or clumped ice in the ice bin, or ice forming under the ice maker, usually means the mould is getting more water than it should, or the water is missing the mould. LG explains that its water valve opens electrically and relies on household pressure to snap shut. Low pressure can let it drip, and pressure above 120 psi can overfill the tray; LG's range is 20 to 120 psi, or 40 to 120 psi on models with a filter. Whirlpool adds a fridge or ice maker that isn't level, a fill cup that isn't lined up with the water spout, and a blocked defrost drain. On some LG models with the ice maker in the door, LG says switching the ice maker off stops freezer air reaching that compartment, so the ice melts and leaks.
Water at the front below the dispenser can come from ice jammed in the chute and melting, which Whirlpool lists. Water behind or under the fridge points to the supply side: Whirlpool says to look for water at the bottom of the fridge, near the hinge and at the household connection, and notes that a water filter installed incorrectly can also cause trouble. Standalone under-counter ice makers have their own drain. GE lists a loose drain cap, a drain tube knocked out of line after the unit was moved, a blocked household drain, an ice maker out of level, and leaking drain-pump connections.

- Check the levelWhirlpool says both the fridge and the ice maker should be level. Put a spirit level on a shelf, side to side and front to back, and adjust the feet as your manual shows.
- Reseat the bin and keep the ice maker onLG says to take the ice bin out and put it back so the compartment closes properly, and to make sure the ice maker is switched on. Break up and discard any slabs of fused ice.
- Flush the air after a filter changeLG says air in the line after installation or a filter change can cause leaks, and suggests dispensing about 8 to 11 litres (2 to 3 gallons) of water to flush it. Whirlpool says an incorrectly installed filter can reduce flow; reseat it until it locks.
- Look at the supply connectionPull the fridge out carefully and look for drips at the valve, the fitting on the back of the fridge, and along the line. Whirlpool's freestanding ice maker guide says to tighten any connection that leaks. Turn the water off first, and don't force a copper line that is kinked or corroded.
- Clear a jammed chuteWhirlpool suggests freeing ice clumps in the chute with a long plastic or wooden handle, never a knife, and taking the bin out to thaw if it is frozen solid.
- Standalone units: check the drainMake sure the drain cap is in place and tight, and that the drain tube still lines up with the standpipe, as GE describes, especially if the ice maker was recently moved.

How it differs by design
- Freezer-compartment ice makers (most top-freezer, side-by-side and many bottom-freezer fridges) leak mostly from overfilling or a fill cup out of line. The water freezes into slabs in the bin or ice on the freezer floor.
- In-door ice makers (common on French-door LG and Samsung models) sit in an insulated compartment in the fresh-food door. LG says the compartment door must seal and the ice maker must stay on, or the ice melts and runs out.
- Standalone and under-counter ice makers drain melt water continuously, by gravity or with a small pump. GE's checks for these are all about the drain: cap, tube, household drain, level and pump connections.
- Homes on a private well, common in rural parts of Ottawa such as Manotick and around Chelsea and Cantley, get their pressure from a pump and pressure tank, so the pressure at the fridge rises and falls as the pump cycles. It's worth checking against LG's 20 to 120 psi range.

When the mould, its sensor or its motor is faulty. LG mentions a flow-sensor fault on some of its early twist-tray ice makers as one cause of overfilling.
Supply line or fitting replacement

Why is my ice maker leaking water into the freezer?
Common causes are overfilling from water pressure that's too high or too low, a fill cup that isn't lined up with the spout, a fridge that isn't level, and a blocked defrost drain. Whirlpool and LG both list these. Level the fridge first, then check your water pressure.
Can low water pressure make an ice maker leak?
Yes. LG says its water valve relies on household pressure to close firmly, so low pressure can let it drip. Too much pressure can overfill the tray. LG's range is 20 to 120 psi, or 40 to 120 psi on models with a filter.
Why is my ice coming out in one big block?
Water that overfills the mould, or ice that melts and refreezes, fuses the cubes together. LG lists overfilling from pressure problems; a power cut can also partly melt the bin. Empty it, let it refill, and book if the slabs return.
Can a new water filter cause the ice maker to leak?
It can. LG says air trapped after a filter change can cause leaks and recommends flushing 8 to 11 litres (2 to 3 gallons) through the dispenser. Whirlpool says a filter that isn't installed correctly can also cause problems.
Should I turn off the water to a leaking ice maker?
If the leak is steady or reaching the floor, yes. Turn the ice maker off and close the supply valve behind or under the fridge until it's fixed.
