Cooktop repair
A separate cooktop is set into the counter with no oven underneath, which changes the repair: the unit has to be lifted out of the cutout to reach anything, the wiring is usually hard-wired into a junction box in the cabinet below, and a cracked glass top can be the whole appliance. RepairWell diagnoses the cooktop in place where possible and tells you in writing what the fix costs before lifting anything.
We repair coil, radiant glass, induction and gas cooktops in Ottawa and Gatineau kitchens. Induction has its own page (induction cooktop repair) because its faults and parts are different. On gas cooktops, everything on the gas side is certified-technician work; the only safe home step is cleaning and seating the burner caps.

Types and configurations we service
- Radiant glass (ceramic) cooktops — Radiant elements, limiter switches and a touch control under one sheet of glass; the most common separate cooktop.
- Coil cooktops — Plug-in elements with receptacles and infinite switches; simple and inexpensive to repair.
- Induction cooktops — Copper coils and power electronics; see induction cooktop repair.
- Gas cooktops — Sealed burners, spark igniters and a spark module; gas-side work by certified technicians only.
- Downdraft and modular cooktops — Include a blower and duct under the counter; the fan and its control are extra failure points.
Symptoms we're called for

Possible causes
These are possibilities, not a diagnosis; the technician confirms the cause on site.
- A burned-out radiant element or a limiter switch that has failed open under the glass
- A coil element, its receptacle or the infinite switch behind the knob, which Frigidaire's checks for a non-heating coil burner are aimed at
- A touch-control board that has lost a zone, or a control that is locked
- A spark igniter, spark module or wet electrode on a gas cooktop, or a cap seated off-centre
- Boil-over that has run under the glass onto the control board
- A loose or heat-damaged connection at the terminal block or junction box in the cabinet
- A missing leg of 240 V supply, so the indicator lights work but nothing heats; Frigidaire notes a voltage or wiring problem is possible when no burners heat on a new installation
- On downdraft models, a blower motor, lift mechanism or duct problem
Repairs a technician may recommend
- Replace a radiant element or limiter switch
- Replace a coil element, receptacle or infinite switch
- Replace the touch-control board, user interface or a single-zone control
- Replace the spark igniter, spark module or burner head on a gas cooktop (certified technician)
- Replace the glass top where it is cracked, when the cost makes sense
- Repair heat-damaged wiring at the terminal block
- Replace the downdraft blower motor or lift actuator
- Re-seat and reseal the cooktop in the counter cutout after service
Typical components involved: radiant or coil elements and receptacles, infinite switches or touch-control board, limiter switches and hot-surface indicators, glass top and trim, gas burners, caps, igniters and spark module (gas), terminal block and junction-box wiring, downdraft blower and lift, cooling fan on electronic models.
Safe checks before you book
- Look for a control-lock or child-lock indicator and hold the lock key as the manual describes
- On a coil cooktop, press the centre safety switch on the element and swap two same-size coils; if the fault moves with the coil, the coil is at fault (Frigidaire's own test)
- Wipe the glass and touch panel dry; a wet or dirty panel can ignore touches
- On a gas cooktop, remove and wash the cap and burner head when cold, dry them completely and reseat the cap level
- Reset the breaker fully off and on; most cooktops are hard-wired and have no plug to pull
- Use flat, heavy-bottomed pans; Frigidaire notes lightweight or warped cookware heats poorly on glass
Stop using it if
- A cracked glass top with liquid under it, or a chip near an element: stop using that zone
- A gas smell, or a burner that lights with a pop or a tall yellow flame: turn off and ventilate
- An element that stays on with the control off
- Scorching, smoke or a smell from the cabinet below the cooktop
Never work on gas lines, wiring, refrigerant or microwave components yourself.
What to expect during diagnosis and repair
The technician tests each zone and the controls, then decides whether the cooktop must come out. Many faults can be confirmed from below through the cabinet; others need the cooktop lifted from the counter, which is a two-person job on some large gas and induction models. On a gas cooktop a certified technician does all burner, igniter and valve work. Elements, switches and igniters are metered before anything is ordered. You get a written finding with the total before the repair starts. Coil elements, common radiant elements and igniters are often on the truck; touch-control boards and glass tops are ordered by model number, and the cooktop is resealed to the counter afterwards.
Repair or replace?
Elements, switches, igniters and limiters are moderate repairs that make sense on almost any cooktop. The two faults that push toward replacement are a cracked glass top and a failed touch-control board on a model where the part is expensive or unavailable, since either one can approach the cost of a new cooktop. Downdraft cooktops and gas cooktops sit further toward repair because a replacement must match the counter cutout and, for gas, be connected by a licensed gas fitter. The finding shows the repair total and you decide.

Pricing factors
The diagnostic visit is $89, waived when you go ahead with the repair, and the quote is given on the spot. What moves the repair price:
- Element or switch versus touch-control board or glass top
- Whether the cooktop must be lifted from the counter and resealed
- Gas igniter and burner work by a certified technician
- Hard-wired connections: Our technician disconnects and reconnects an existing hard-wired appliance at the junction box, like for like, on the same existing circuit. A new circuit, panel work or rewiring needs a licensed electrician, and the written finding will say so.
- Downdraft blower and duct access
- Second appliance on the same visit: If a second appliance is diagnosed on the same visit, it is $45 instead of the full $89.

Cooktop questions
Can a cracked glass cooktop be repaired?
The glass itself can't be patched; it is replaced as a part, and on many models the cost is significant. Until it is replaced, stop using zones near the crack, because liquid under the glass can reach the electronics.
One zone on my glass cooktop stopped. Is that the element?
It may be the radiant element, the limiter switch under it, or the control. All three produce the same symptom. The technician meters each and the finding names the one that failed.
Do you repair gas cooktops?
Yes, with certified technicians for anything on the gas side. The only home check we suggest is cleaning and reseating the burner caps.
My cooktop is hard-wired. Can you still service it?
Yes, the technician isolates it at the breaker. Our technician disconnects and reconnects an existing hard-wired appliance at the junction box, like for like, on the same existing circuit. A new circuit, panel work or rewiring needs a licensed electrician, and the written finding will say so.
Is there a difference between a cooktop and a rangetop?
A cooktop drops into the counter and is controlled from the top surface; a rangetop sits on the counter's front edge with knobs on the front and is usually gas. We repair both; call with the model.
