Refrigerator leaking water
Urgent Even a slow leak can lift laminate, stain a subfloor or reach a power bar within days, and water near the outlet behind a fridge is an electrical hazard.
What this symptom might mean
Where the water shows up is the best clue. A puddle inside the fridge, usually under the crisper drawers, or ice on the freezer floor often means defrost water isn't reaching the drain pan: the defrost drain at the back of the freezer can plug with ice or debris, and the meltwater overflows into the cabinet instead. Water at the back or under the fridge is more often the supply side: a loose or cracked water line, a filter that isn't seated or is the wrong type, or an inlet valve fitting weeping at the connection. A fridge that isn't level can let the drain pan overflow, and a cracked drain pan will leak every time the unit defrosts.
Water at the front, below the dispenser, is a different problem again, usually air in the line after a filter change, ice melting in the chute, or a sticky dispenser lever, and rarely a repair. If the leak coincides with warm temperatures inside, the defrost system may be the real fault and the water is only the symptom.
Safe checks you can do first
- Contain the water and protect the outlet. Mop up, then put a towel or a shallow tray where the water collects so you can see how fast it returns. If water is anywhere near the outlet or a power bar, unplug the fridge at the wall by the plug, not the cord, and keep the floor dry until the source is found.
- Find where it starts. Check inside under the crispers, the freezer floor, the back of the cabinet, under the front kick plate and around the dispenser. A leak that only appears once or twice a day is usually defrost water; a leak that keeps coming is usually the supply line.
- Water filter. If the leak started after a filter change, remove the filter and refit it until it locks; Whirlpool and LG both say a filter that isn't fully seated or isn't the right type for the model can drip at the filter head. A filter that is very overdue can also leak.
- Water line and shut-off. Look at the supply line behind the fridge for kinks, cracks or a wet fitting. Do not tighten fittings hard or disturb the shut-off valve beyond turning it off if the leak is active; a saddle valve can fail when moved.
- Level and drain pan. Check the fridge is level side to side and slightly back-tilted so the doors self-close. If the drain pan is accessible behind the kick plate, check it isn't cracked or overflowing. Don't remove panels inside the freezer to reach the drain.
- Dispenser. If water only drips at the dispenser after a filter change, run a few litres through to purge the air. If ice is melting in the chute, empty the ice bin if the ice maker has been switched off.
Nothing above involves gas, wiring, refrigerant or removing panels. Those are technician-only: Removing the freezer back panel to clear or thaw the defrost drain; Replacing the inlet valve or working on pressurised water fittings behind the fridge; Anything involving the sealed refrigerant system.
Repairs a technician may recommend
After inspection, not from the symptom alone.
- Defrost drain clearing and drain heater or drain tube replacement. When meltwater is pooling under the crispers or freezing on the freezer floor. A frequent, moderate repair.
- Water inlet valve replacement. When the valve body or its fittings weep at the back of the fridge, or the valve doesn't close fully.
- Water line, fitting or filter housing replacement. When the tubing is cracked, split by a past freeze, or the filter head itself is leaking.
- Drain pan replacement or levelling. When the pan is cracked or the cabinet is tilted so the pan overflows.
- Defrost system repair. When the drain is freezing repeatedly because the defrost cycle itself isn't completing.
- Ice maker or fill tube repair. When the leak traces back to an overfilling ice maker or a fill tube that has frozen and split.
When to book
Book as soon as you've found where the water is coming from and it isn't the filter or a purge after a filter change. Leaks that return inside the cabinet, at the back or under the fridge almost always need a part or a drain cleared behind a panel. If the leak is active and you can't stop it, close the water shut-off, unplug the fridge if it is safe to reach the plug, and tell us when you call so we can prioritise. Questions
Why is there water under the crisper drawers?
Most often the defrost drain has plugged with ice or debris, so the meltwater from each defrost cycle runs into the fridge instead of the pan underneath. Clearing it means opening the freezer back panel, which is a technician job.
My fridge leaks only once a day. Why?
That pattern matches defrost water. The freezer defrosts on a timer or a control a few times a day, and if the drain is blocked, each cycle produces a small puddle. A constant drip usually points to the water supply instead.
Can a leaking fridge damage my floor?
Yes. Laminate and engineered wood swell quickly, and in a condo a leak can reach the unit below. Contain the water and don't wait for it to get worse.
Do I need a plumber or an appliance technician?
If the leak is at the fridge (drain, valve, filter, line) it's us. If the leak is at the household shut-off valve or the pipe feeding it, that's a plumber. Tell us what you see and we'll say which.
