Range hood repair
A range hood that no longer clears the smoke is usually one of three things: a fan that has stopped, a fan that runs but moves little air, or a hood that was never really venting in the first place. The last one is more common than people expect. Whirlpool's own troubleshooting starts with the filters, the recirculating charcoal filter and the duct rather than the motor, and so do we.

Types and configurations we service
- Under-cabinet hoods — The standard builder hood; fan motors, switches and lights are the usual repairs.

Possible causes
These are possibilities, not a diagnosis; the technician confirms the cause on site.
- Grease filters clogged, missing or fitted the wrong way, which Whirlpool lists first for a hood not removing smoke or odour
- A recirculating hood with a spent charcoal filter, or a hood that was set to recirculate when the owner expected it to vent outside
- A backdraft damper stuck shut with grease, or a roof or wall cap blocked by a bird nest or ice
- A duct run that is too long, too narrow, made of flexible foil, or crushed above the cabinets
- A fan motor with worn bearings, or a blower wheel caked with grease and out of balance
- A failed speed switch, capacitor or control board, so only some speeds work
- A blown lamp socket, transformer or LED driver
- Room air problems: a tightly sealed house with no makeup air, or ceiling fans and vents pulling smoke away from the hood, which Whirlpool also notes
Repairs a technician may recommend
- Replace or clean grease filters and replace the charcoal filter on recirculating hoods
- Replace the fan motor or blower assembly
- Clean and rebalance the blower wheel
- Replace the speed switch, capacitor or control board
- Replace the light socket, transformer, LED module or halogen bulbs
- Free or replace the backdraft damper at the hood and at the wall or roof cap
- Replace the downdraft lift motor, switch or blower

Safe checks before you book
- Take out the grease filters and wash them; if light won't pass through them, they were part of the problem
- Find out whether the hood vents outside or recirculates: look for a duct above the cabinet or a charcoal filter behind the grease filter
- Replace the charcoal filter on a recirculating hood if it is older than the six months Whirlpool suggests for normal use
- With the fan on high, hold a tissue at the hood: if it barely pulls, the problem is airflow, not the motor
- Go outside and watch the wall or roof cap while the fan runs; the flap should open
- Check the breaker or the outlet in the cabinet above the hood
Stop using it if
- A burning smell from the motor or a hood that is hot to the touch above the fan
- Grease dripping from the fan housing, which is a fire risk over a cooktop
- Sparking or flickering from the light sockets
- A downdraft that stops half-raised over an active burner
Never work on gas lines, wiring, refrigerant or microwave components yourself.
What to expect during diagnosis and repair
The technician runs the hood at each speed, measures the airflow by hand at the filters, then opens the hood to see the blower, damper and the start of the duct. A motor that is seized or noisy is obvious; a motor that runs fine into a blocked duct is the more common finding, and the technician will look above the cabinet and at the exterior cap where accessible. You get a written finding with the total before the repair. Filters, switches, lamp parts and common fan motors are often on the truck; blower assemblies for chimney and island hoods and control boards are ordered by model. Where the fix is duct work in a wall or attic, the finding says so and refers you to the right trade ([DUCT WORK SCOPE TO BE CONFIRMED]).
Repair or replace?
Filters, switches, lights and dampers are small repairs. A fan motor is a mid-range part, and on a basic under-cabinet hood a motor plus a switch can come close to the cost of a new hood, which the finding will show. Chimney, island, insert and downdraft hoods are generally worth repairing because replacement means matching a duct, a ceiling mount or a counter cutout. In every case, if the real limitation is the duct run or a recirculating design, replacing the hood won't change much, and we say that before you spend anything.

Range hood questions
My hood runs but does nothing. Is the motor weak?
Sometimes, but check the filters and whether the hood vents outside at all. Whirlpool's first checks are filters, the charcoal filter on recirculating hoods and the duct. If those are fine and the tissue test shows little pull, the blower or damper is the next suspect.
Can you convert my recirculating hood to vent outside?

Why is there a cold draft from my hood in winter?
The backdraft damper at the hood or the exterior cap is probably stuck open or missing. Replacing or freeing the damper is a common winter repair in Ottawa.
The lights work but the fan doesn't. Same circuit?
Usually the same power feed, so the fault is likely the switch, a capacitor or the motor itself rather than the supply. The technician meters each.
Do you repair the fan in an over-the-range microwave?

How often should filters be cleaned?
Whirlpool advises cleaning grease filters often to prevent buildup and replacing charcoal filters about every six months with normal use. Heavy frying shortens both intervals.
