Oven and Stove Repair Cost in Ottawa

Ovens and stoves cover more ground than any other appliance category: electric coil, smooth glass-top, induction and gas; freestanding ranges, slide-ins, wall ovens and separate cooktops. The repair cost depends first on which of those you have, and second on the part. A bake element on a freestanding electric range and an induction power board on a built-in cooktop are both "stove repairs", but they are very different jobs.

Bake and broil elements (electric ovens)

A failed bake element is one of the most common reasons an electric oven is not heating. Elements sometimes show visible blistering or a break; sometimes they fail without a mark. On most freestanding ranges the element is reached from inside the oven cavity, which keeps labour down. On some models it is hidden under the oven floor, which takes longer.

Temperature sensor and calibration

An oven that is off temperature or heats unevenly may have a faulty temperature sensor, a failing element that heats weakly, or a door seal letting heat out. The sensor is usually a modest part; the diagnosis is where the time goes.

Oven igniter and gas safety valve (gas ovens)

On many gas ovens, a hot-surface igniter must draw enough current to open the gas safety valve. A weak igniter can glow but never open the valve. RepairWell diagnoses gas appliances. Surface elements, burners and switches

Coil elements and their receptacles are among the least expensive stove repairs. Radiant elements under a glass top cost more and take longer. Infinite switches, the controls behind each knob, can fail so that an element does not heat or stays on high. On gas cooktops, a burner that keeps clicking or will not light often starts with cleaning or a wet cap, and past that is gas-contractor work.

Glass cooktop

A cracked glass cooktop means replacing the whole glass top, which is often one of the more expensive parts on the range and sometimes discontinued on older models. Stop using a cracked top.

Control boards, clocks and induction electronics

Electronic controls run the oven, the clock and the self-clean cycle. On induction cooktops, power boards drive the coils. These are high-priced parts, and availability for older models varies.

Door parts and self-clean lock

Door hinges, gaskets and glass affect how well the oven holds heat. The door lock used by the self-clean cycle can fail and leave the door locked. Wall ovens add labour because the unit often has to be pulled from the cabinet, which usually takes two people.

Published cost figures, and how to read them

These are third-party published averages, not a RepairWell quote. The US figures are national averages in US dollars and do not convert directly to Ottawa prices.

HomeGuide reports a US national range of US$150 to US$350 for most oven repairs, labour of US$50 to US$125 an hour, and US$700 to US$1,600 to replace an oven.
Angi reports a US national average of US$200 for oven repair, with a typical range of US$130 to US$310; it gives US$100 to US$250 for electric ovens, US$100 to US$600 for gas ovens and US$150 to US$600 for stovetop repairs (page updated September 2026).

The spread between sources is wide. The HomeStars Ottawa figures rest on a small number of reviews dated 2020, so they are best read as a sign that stove repairs vary a lot, not as a local price.

Repair or replace: the numbers to run

HomeGuide suggests repairing an oven that is under 5 to 10 years old when the repair costs less than 50% of a replacement, and replacing one over 10 to 20 years old or when the repair exceeds half the cost of a new unit. Angi uses the same 50% line. Ranges tend to be long-lived: the 2007 NAHB study put gas ranges at 15 years and electric ranges at 13, and Angi gives 12 to 16 years for ovens. Where ranges differ from other appliances is that the expensive repairs are concentrated in a few parts: the glass top, the control board and, on induction models, the power electronics. An element or sensor on an older range is usually worth doing. A glass top or board on an older range is where the comparison with a new one gets close, especially if the part is scarce.

Natural Resources Canada says ENERGY STAR certified ranges and cooktops are up to 10% more efficient than standard models. Cooking is a small share of most households' energy use, so this is rarely the deciding factor.

Before you book: quick checks

A few oven and stove problems are settings or supply rather than faults. Check that the range's breaker has not tripped; many electric ranges are on a double breaker, and one half can trip. Check that the control lock or a delay-start setting is not on, which can keep an oven from heating. On a gas cooktop, make sure the burner caps are seated and dry after cleaning. Anything past that, including removing panels or touching gas parts, is for a technician.
