Oven door locked or won't unlock
A self-cleaning oven locks its door on purpose.
Soon A locked door after a clean may just be the oven cooling, but a lock that will not release takes the oven out of use, and heavy smoke during a self-clean means turning the oven off and airing out the kitchen.
What this symptom usually means
A self-cleaning oven locks its door on purpose. GE says the only time the door should be locked is during self-clean, and the lock holds until the cavity has cooled. Whirlpool says its ovens must cool to about 95 °C (200 °F) before the door will open, and GE says the cool-down after a self-clean can take 30 to 90 minutes, with the lock light staying on the whole time. LG says the same of its Self Clean and Easy Clean cycles. So a door that is still locked half an hour after the cycle ends can be normal.
A door that stays locked with the oven cold, or that locks when you only wanted to bake, is different. The control may need a reset after a power cut or a glitch; each maker gives its own reset, from holding Cancel or Clear/Off to switching off the breaker for one to five minutes. If a reset does not release it, the lock motor, the lock switch that tells the control where the latch is, or the control itself may have failed. On older ranges with a manual lever, the latch may simply not be released yet, or the knobs may need to be set a particular way first. Whichever design you have, GE's advice is the same: do not force the latch.
Checks you can do yourself
- Give it timeAfter a self-clean, leave the oven closed until it has cooled. GE allows 30 to 90 minutes; Whirlpool says the oven must fall to about 95 °C (200 °F) before the door opens. A lock light during that time is normal.
- Cancel and waitPress Cancel/Off (Whirlpool) or hold Clear/Off for more than three seconds (LG), then wait. Whirlpool says pressing Cancel/Off starts a latch reset that takes 20 to 30 seconds. Check your manual; the key and timing vary by model.
- Power resetSwitch the range or wall oven off at the breaker, wait, then switch it back on. GE says 30 seconds, Whirlpool one minute and LG five minutes. On LG models you may hear the lock move when it resets.
- If the power went out during a cleanWhirlpool's advice is to select Self Clean, then Cancel, wait a couple of minutes, and try again. The control may be waiting to finish the interrupted cycle.
- Manual latch (older ranges)On a range with a lever latch, wait 30 to 90 minutes after the cycle, then gently slide the latch to the left. GE notes some older models need a release button pressed while sliding, and some need the Set and Temperature knobs turned to Clean first. Never force it.
- GE's longer resetIf a GE oven is still locked and empty, GE suggests running Self Clean for one to two hours, letting it cool for about 30 minutes, then trying again. Only do this with the oven empty and the kitchen ventilated.
- Before any self-cleanRemove racks unless your manual says they are self-clean safe, plus the broiler pan, cookware and any foil (Whirlpool, GE). Wipe out loose soil to reduce smoke. Move pet birds to another closed, well-ventilated room; Whirlpool warns the fumes can kill some birds. Keep the kitchen ventilated and do not block the oven vent.

How it differs by design
Automatic lock versus manual latch. GE says some models use an automatic lock that the control engages and releases on its own, and others a mechanical latch; GE says on these models the lock should release by itself once the oven cools. Older ranges have a lever you slide by hand, and GE notes some need a release button or the knobs set to Clean first. The checks above cover both, but the lever is the only one you move by hand.
Self-clean, Easy Clean and steam clean. LG says its ovens also lock during Easy Clean, not only during the high-heat Self Clean. A lock that holds after any cleaning cycle follows the same logic: cool first, then reset.
Range versus wall oven. A freestanding range is reset at its plug or breaker. A wall oven may be hard-wired and has no plug; the breaker is the only reset.
Reset timing varies. GE gives 30 seconds with the power off, Whirlpool one minute and LG five minutes. Use the time for your brand, or the longest of them if unsure.

- Forcing or prying the door or latch open

Door lock motor and switch assembly replacement
When the lock will not release after the resets, or locks on its own. The technician checks whether the motor, the switch or the wiring is at fault.
Control board replacement
When the lock and switch test fine but the control keeps the door locked or reports a lock fault.
Temperature sensor replacement
When the control thinks the oven is still hot after it has cooled, and so holds the lock. The sensor is checked against its specification.
Manual latch repair
When an older lever latch is bent, broken or jammed, for example after it was forced.
Door hinge or gasket repair
When the door does not sit square, so the latch cannot engage or release cleanly.
Releasing a stuck door for service
When the door must be opened to reach parts inside. The technician does this without damaging the door or the lock.

How long should the door stay locked after a self-clean?
Until the oven has cooled. GE allows 30 to 90 minutes after the cycle ends, and Whirlpool says the oven must cool to about 95 °C (200 °F) before the door opens. The lock light can stay on during that time.
Can I force the door open?
No. GE says not to force the latch at any time. Forcing it can bend the latch or damage the lock, which turns a reset into a repair. If the resets do not work, book.
The door locked when I only set Bake. Why?
The control may have lost track of the latch, for example after a power blip. Whirlpool suggests pressing Cancel/Off to start a latch reset, or switching off the breaker for a minute. If it happens again, the lock switch or control may be failing.
Is the smoke during a self-clean normal?
GE says a small amount is normal. A lot of smoke can mean heavy grease or something left inside. Whirlpool suggests wiping out loose soil first and keeping the kitchen well ventilated.
I have a pet bird. Can I run self-clean?
Whirlpool warns that fumes from the self-cleaning cycle can kill some birds. Move them to another closed, well-ventilated room for the whole cycle, or ask us about other cleaning options your model offers.
Do I have to take the racks out?
It depends on the racks. Whirlpool says to remove the racks, broiler pan, cookware and foil. GE notes that dark self-clean racks can stay in, but shiny racks will discolour and may warp slightly. Your manual says which you have.
