Wall oven repair
A wall oven has no cooktop and no plug. It is hard-wired to a 240 V circuit through a junction box, it is screwed into a cabinet at chest height, and on many models the heavy part of the work means sliding the oven out of the cutout onto a support. Those three facts are why wall ovens have their own page: the electrical checks are different, access is different, and a double or combination oven has two control systems in one cabinet.

Types and configurations we service
- Single wall ovens — One cavity, one control; the lightest wall oven to remove for service.
- Double wall ovens — Two cavities sharing a control and a circuit; heavy, and one cavity failing while the other works is a common call.
- Combination wall ovens (microwave over oven) — The upper unit is a microwave with its own high-voltage section; see microwave repair for that half.
- Steam and combi-steam wall ovens — Add a water reservoir, pump and steam generator; scale and pump faults are model-specific.

Possible causes
These are possibilities, not a diagnosis; the technician confirms the cause on site.
- A tripped or half-tripped double breaker; Whirlpool's first checks for a dead wall oven are the breaker, fuses and a one-minute power-off reset at the panel
- A loose or heat-damaged connection at the junction box or the oven's terminal block
- A wall oven wired to a circuit smaller than it needs, which Whirlpool notes depends on the model's kilowatt rating
- A control lock left on, which Whirlpool notes is cleared by holding start for three seconds on many models
- Bake element, temperature sensor, relay board and door gasket faults common to all ovens
- A door-lock motor or thermal fuse tripped by self-clean, which is more common on wall ovens because they run hotter in an enclosed cabinet
- A cooling fan that has failed, letting the control area overheat and shut down
Repairs a technician may recommend
- Replace the bake, broil or convection element
- Replace the temperature sensor and verify calibration
- Replace the relay board, electronic control or touch panel
- Replace the door lock motor, latch or thermal fuse after a self-clean fault
- Replace the cooling fan or its thermostat
- Replace the door gasket, hinges or inner glass
- Repair the terminal block or a damaged wiring harness where heat damage is found; junction-box work: Our technician disconnects and reconnects an existing hard-wired appliance at the junction box, like for like, on the same existing circuit. A new circuit, panel work or rewiring needs a licensed electrician, and the written finding will say so.
Typical components involved: elements and convection fan, temperature sensor and control board, cooling fan and thermostat, door lock motor and thermal fuse, door hinges, gasket and glass, terminal block and junction-box connection.
Safe checks before you book
- Check the display for control lock, Sabbath mode or a delay start, and hold start for a few seconds to clear a lock as the manual describes
- Turn the double breaker fully off, wait one minute and turn it back on, as Whirlpool's wall-oven reset suggests
- Confirm that one leg of power hasn't been lost: a clock that works with no heat is a common sign
- Look at the elements cold for a break or blister, and run your hand around the gasket for gaps
- Place an oven thermometer on the centre rack and record the reading so the technician has a number
Stop using it if
- Sparking or a glowing spot on an element: switch off at the breaker
- A burning smell from the control panel, or a display that flickers and dies
- A cracked inner door glass
- Heat damage or a scorched smell at the cabinet around the oven, which can indicate a wiring or cooling-fan fault
Never work on gas lines, wiring, refrigerant or microwave components yourself.
What to expect during diagnosis and repair
The technician checks the display and the breaker first, then measures the cavity through a heat cycle. Elements and the sensor can often be reached from inside the cavity; the control, relay board and cooling fan are behind the control panel, and on some models the oven must be slid partly out of the cabinet on a support, which is a two-person job on double ovens ([TWO-TECHNICIAN VISIT POLICY TO BE CONFIRMED]). The junction-box connection is inspected with the circuit off. You get a written finding with the total before any part is fitted. Elements and sensors are often on the truck; boards, door locks and cooling fans are ordered by model.
Repair or replace?
Wall ovens lean toward repair more than ranges do. They are fitted to a cabinet cutout, replacement often means a new trim or a modified opening, and the elements, sensors and door parts are moderate repairs. A control board on an older double oven is the case that needs thought, because the board can be expensive and, on some discontinued models, unavailable. Combination units with a failed microwave section are still usually repaired rather than replaced. The finding shows the total beside those considerations.

The diagnostic visit is $89, waived when you go ahead with the repair, and the quote is given on the spot. What moves the repair price:
- Element or sensor versus control board or door-lock assembly
- Whether the oven must be slid out of the cabinet, and whether two technicians are needed
- Double and combination ovens with two control systems
- Hard-wired connection: Our technician disconnects and reconnects an existing hard-wired appliance at the junction box, like for like, on the same existing circuit. A new circuit, panel work or rewiring needs a licensed electrician, and the written finding will say so.
- Second appliance on the same visit: If a second appliance is diagnosed on the same visit, it is $45 instead of the full $89.

What makes a wall oven different to repair?
It is hard-wired, mounted in a cabinet, and often has to be slid out to reach the control area. The heating faults are the same as any electric oven; the access and the electrical checks are what differ.
The oven is completely dead. Is it the oven or the house wiring?
Either. Whirlpool's own first steps are the breaker and a one-minute power-off reset. If power arrives at the oven and it is still dead, the control, a thermal fuse or the terminal block are the next checks.
Do you disconnect the oven at the junction box?

Only the top oven of my double oven works. Big repair?
Not necessarily. Each cavity has its own elements and sensor, and often its own relay. A single element or sensor is a moderate repair; a shared control board is the more expensive case.
