Miele is the premium European brand we see in Ottawa's Glebe, Rockcliffe, Westboro and Old Chelsea kitchens and in higher-end Gatineau and Aylmer builds: dishwashers first, then compact washers with heat-pump dryers in condos, wall ovens, induction cooktops and, less often, built-in refrigeration. Owners tend to keep Miele appliances a long time, which is why the model and serial number matter so much for parts.
Miele describes itself as an independent family-owned company since 1899 and states that it tests washing machines, dryers, dishwashers and ovens "to the equivalent of 20 years' use"; that is Miele's claim about its testing, not a promise about any particular appliance. About Miele appliances
Miele Canada states that Miele "has been an independent family-owned company since its establishment in 1899" in Germany and still belongs to the descendants of its founders, under the motto "Immer Besser" (forever better). Miele's page also says it is the only manufacturer in its industry to test washers, dryers, dishwashers and ovens to the equivalent of 20 years' use. Miele sells in Canada through Miele Canada, with its own service network.
Miele identifies appliances by a product type (model) and a serial number on a data plate; on some cooktops the numbers can also be shown on the display by pressing a control combination, which Miele Canada documents per model. For repair, Miele appliances use Miele-specific electronics, pumps, heaters and door components; there is little cross-compatibility with other brands, and the data plate is essential. Miele's dishwashers and compact laundry are the most common independent-repair calls.
Finding your Miele model and serial number
Miele's plate finder pages say the serial number and product type are on the data plate, and give these locations. Cooktops, warming drawers and vacuum-sealing drawers: on the underside of the appliance; on some cooktops (Miele Canada documents KM 7xxx models) the model and serial number can also be shown on the timer display by pressing two sensor controls at once. Built-in refrigerators: on the underside of the appliance; a second data plate is supplied in the accessories kit. Dishwashers, washers, dryers, ovens and freestanding refrigerators: Miele shows the plate position in a diagram per product type; on most dishwashers it is on the door edge or frame, on laundry inside the door or filler-flap area, and on ovens on the frame with the door open. Parts and compatibility
Miele parts are Miele-specific and are supplied through Miele's own Canadian channels; there is no aftermarket equivalent for most components. Lead times depend on whether the part is stocked in Canada or shipped from Germany, and we tell you the expected time in the written quote rather than guessing. Miele appliances are designed to be serviced, and many faults on dishwashers and laundry are repairable with a single component. Some Miele repairs and firmware-related work may only be possible through Miele's own service; the finding will say so.
Miele questions
Miele says its appliances are tested for 20 years. Does that mean mine will last 20 years?
No. That is Miele's statement about its testing programme, not a warranty or a guarantee for your appliance. Miele's actual warranty terms are on your documentation and through Miele Canada.
Where is the model and serial number on my Miele dishwasher?
On the data plate, which Miele shows in a diagram on its plate-finder page; on most models it is on the door edge or frame when the door is open. Read us the product type and the full serial number.
Do you repair Miele, or should I call Miele directly?
