Café appliance repair

Café is GE Appliances' design-led line: matte white, matte black, stainless and platinum-glass appliances with knob and handle kits you can swap. In Ottawa and Gatineau renovations it usually shows up as a professional-style range or a slide-in dual-fuel range, a wall oven, a French-door fridge, a beverage centre and a matching dishwasher, all with the same hardware finish. That changes the repair: a replacement part has to work, and anything you can see has to match.

Under the finish, a Café appliance is a GE Appliances product. It uses the SmartHQ app, gets software updates over Wi-Fi, and needs parts looked up by exact model number. Send us the model number from the rating label when you book so we can check parts first. RepairWell is an independent repair service. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by or authorized by Café, GE Appliances, Haier or Mabe Canada. The diagnostic visit is $89, waived when you go ahead with the repair.

About Café appliances

Who makes Café. Café is a brand of GE Appliances, which describes itself as "GE Appliances, a Haier company" and has its headquarters at Appliance Park in Louisville, Kentucky. Haier bought GE Appliances in June 2016. In Canada, GE Appliances' support page lists Mabe Canada Inc. as its authorized distributor for product information, manuals, repair service and parts for GE, GE Profile, Café, Monogram and Haier appliances. Café Canada's contact page sends service requests to the same Canadian service portal and phone line (1-800-561-3344).

Finishes and hardware. Café Canada sells cooking (ranges, cooktops, wall ovens, microwaves, ventilation, warming drawers), cooling (refrigerators, wine centres, beverage centres, dual-drawer units) and dishwashers. Its Customizable Professional Collection comes in Matte Black, Matte White or Stainless Steel, with interchangeable knob and handle kits in brushed stainless, brushed bronze, brushed black, brushed copper, flat black and brushed brass. The Modern Glass Collection uses a platinum-glass finish with integrated handles and a flush front. Café says hardware customization is available on nearly every piece in its matte collection.

What that means for a repair.

  • Visible parts must match. A door, control panel, knob, handle or glass panel is sold for a specific finish. Ordering by model number and finish avoids a stainless handle turning up for a matte-white oven.
  • Hardware kits are cosmetic. Swapping knob and handle kits is a style change, not a repair. A handle that has come loose, or a knob that no longer turns the control, is a different matter and can point to a worn mount, a broken shaft or an infinite switch or valve behind it.
  • Finishes need care during the job. Matte and glass fronts show marks differently from brushed steel. Doors and panels should be protected and set down on padding whenever they come off.
  • Gas and dual-fuel. Café sells gas, dual-fuel and induction ranges. On dual-fuel models the cooktop is gas and the oven is electric. We diagnose gas appliances. Burner, igniter, valve and gas-connection work is done by a certified gas contractor we work with, not by our own technicians. The electric oven side is ours.

Smart features. Café ranges, wall ovens, refrigerators, dishwashers and its coffee makers connect through the SmartHQ app. Café pushes new features over Wi-Fi, such as Steakhouse Mode, No-Preheat Air Fry and holiday Precision Cooking modes, and an appliance must be on Wi-Fi through SmartHQ to receive them. Café's own help line for connection problems is the Connected Home Support line, 1-800-220-6899. When an oven or fridge loses Wi-Fi and also shows a fault or stops responding to its own buttons, the cause may be the control board or Wi-Fi module, which is a hardware repair.

Finding your Café model and serial number

Café's model and serial finder gives these locations. Refrigerators: inside the fresh-food section, on the left or right wall near the top. Wine and beverage centres: inside the unit, on the left side near the top. Professional ranges: on the bottom of the control panel, visible from below with the oven door open, or behind the left knob with the knob pulled off. Slide-in ranges: on the bottom of the control panel with the door open, or behind the door on the front frame. Freestanding ranges: behind the backguard on riveted metal strips that rotate up, or behind the door on the front frame. Wall ovens: on the top left vertical side trim, visible with the door open. Cooktops and rangetops: at the bottom centre of the rangetop, or behind the left knob. Dishwashers: on the left front inside edge, visible with the door open. Microwaves: on the bottom left corner of the inside edge, with the door open. Range hoods: behind the filters, on the inside walls of the hood. Some newer tags carry a QR code.

How old is it? GE Appliances' Café guide says to use the serial number, not the model number, for the manufacture date. The serial is two letters, six digits and a final letter. The first letter is the month (A January, D February, F March, G April, H May, L June, M July, R August, S September, T October, V November, Z December). The second letter is the year, and the letters repeat every twelve years, so A can mean 2025, 2013 or 2001. The age tells you and us whether it may still be under the manufacturer's warranty.

Pulling a knob off to read a label is fine on a cold, turned-off appliance. Do not remove panels. Our model and serial number guide has more tips.

Parts and compatibility

Café parts are ordered by model number and, for many parts, by serial range. The mechanical and electronic parts often share GE Appliances platforms. The parts you can see (doors, glass panels, control panels, knobs, handles and trim) are finish-specific, and some take longer to arrive than a standard GE part. Professional-style ranges and built-in wall ovens can need more disassembly than a standard freestanding range.

RepairWell is independent. We source parts through Canadian distributors, and availability varies by model and finish. Common functional parts are often easy to get; finish-matched cosmetic parts, glass and parts for newer models can take longer or be back-ordered. The written finding lists the part, the price and the expected lead time before you decide, and parts and labour we install carry our 90-day warranty. If the appliance is still under Café's manufacturer warranty, contact Café Canada first.

Who makes Café appliances?

Café is a GE Appliances brand. GE Appliances has been owned by Haier since 2016, and in Canada it lists Mabe Canada Inc. as its authorized distributor for Café service and parts.

Can I change the handles and knobs on my Café appliance myself?

Yes. Café designs its matte-collection appliances for interchangeable knob and handle kits, and a kit swap is a cosmetic change. If a knob no longer controls the burner or element after a swap, stop using that burner and book a diagnosis.

Where is the model number on a Café range?

It depends on the style. On professional and slide-in ranges, look under the control panel with the oven door open or behind the left knob. On freestanding ranges, check behind the door on the front frame.

Is it worth repairing a Café range or wall oven?

Often, yes. These are expensive to replace and many faults, such as an element, igniter, sensor or door hinge, are single-part repairs. The $89 visit gives you a written finding with the price, so you can compare before deciding.

Can you match my Café finish and hardware on a replacement part?

We order visible parts by model number and finish, so a replacement door, panel or handle should match. Some finish-matched parts take longer to get, and the written quote gives the expected lead time.

My Café oven lost its Wi-Fi connection. Do I need a technician?

Start with Café's Connected Home Support line, 1-800-220-6899, and reconnect through SmartHQ. If the oven also shows an error or ignores its own controls, the control board or Wi-Fi module may have failed, and we can diagnose that.
