GE Profile appliance repair

GE Profile is the step-up line from GE Appliances. It comes from the same company as plain GE models, but with more sensors, more electronic controls and, on many recent units, built-in Wi-Fi. In Ottawa and Gatineau kitchens it usually means a French-door fridge with a door dispenser, a slide-in range with convection and air fry, a quiet top-control dishwasher, or a matched washer and dryer in the laundry room.

A GE Profile repair almost always comes down to the exact model number. Profile units share many platforms with GE-branded models, yet their control boards, sensors and door assemblies are often specific to the Profile version, and a model sold in Canada can differ from its U.S. twin. About GE Profile appliances

Who makes GE Profile. GE Profile is a product line of GE Appliances, which describes itself as "GE Appliances, a Haier company", with its global headquarters at Appliance Park in Louisville, Kentucky. Haier (now Haier Smart Home) bought GE Appliances from General Electric on June 6, 2016, and the agreement lets it use the GE trademark on appliances through 2056. GE, GE Profile, Café, Monogram, Haier and Hotpoint are all GE Appliances brands in the Americas. So a GE Profile fridge is a GE Appliances product built under a licensed name. It is not made by General Electric, the industrial company.

GE Profile in Canada. GE Appliances Canada sells a full Profile line here: refrigerators, ranges, wall ovens, cooktops, dishwashers, microwaves, range hoods, warming drawers, washers, dryers and combination units. GE Appliances' own support page tells Canadian owners that product information, manuals, repair service and parts for GE, GE Profile, Café, Monogram and Haier appliances go through its authorized distributor, Mabe Canada Inc. The same page separates Canadian-built models from U.S. GE Appliances models for parts. That is one reason we look up parts by the exact model number on your label, not by the marketing name.

What makes Profile different to repair. The Profile line is where GE Appliances puts its connected and sensor-driven features, and each one adds parts that can fail:

Smart controls. Profile appliances connect through the SmartHQ app. Smart fridges can alert you when the temperature is too high, the water filter is due or a door is left open. Profile Connect+ sends software updates to connected ranges and wall ovens, adding features such as No-Preheat Air Fry and Steakhouse and Turkey modes. A missing or new menu option after an update is software, not a broken oven.
Cooking. Air fry and convection modes rely on a rear convection fan and element. Some Profile ovens have an in-oven camera that sends close-ups of the dish to your phone. Precision Cooking modes adjust time and temperature from sensors.
Dishwashers. GE Appliances Canada lists features such as the UltraFresh system, Microban antimicrobial protection and Dry Boost with fan assist. The Profile PBT865SSPFS, for example, has Turbo Dry Boost with dual fans and an inline heater, an ABT filter, Steam Prewash, a hard food disposer and a 45 dBA rating. More fans and heaters mean more places a drying fault can come from.
Laundry. The UltraFast Combo washes and dries in one drum in about two hours, according to GE Appliances Canada, and it describes Profile ventless heat-pump dryers as offering 50% more energy-efficient drying. A heat-pump dryer has a small sealed refrigerant circuit. We diagnose it; refrigerant work is done for us by a certified refrigeration technician.
Refrigerators. Hands-Free Autofill uses a sensor to fill a pitcher at the dispenser, and some models schedule hot water. Those add a sensor, a valve or a heated tank to the usual fan, defrost and ice-maker parts.

Recalls. GE Appliances Canada keeps a recall page. Its list includes a 2021 recall of range anti-tip bracket screws covering GE, Profile, Moffat, Insignia and Haier ranges, and a 2016 recall of GE Profile top-loading washers. Check it against your model number before paying for a repair.

Finding your GE Profile model and serial number

GE Appliances' model and serial locator covers GE Profile products, and it notes that GE and GE Profile model numbers always begin and end with a letter. The Profile dishwasher PBT865SSPFS listed on GE Appliances Canada's site is a typical example. Some newer tags carry a QR code. The locator gives these locations:

Bottom-freezer and French-door fridges: inside the fresh-food section on the left or right wall near the top, or inside the freezer section on the left or right wall.
Ranges: behind the door on the front frame; on front-control models, inside the frame under the control panel; on gas models, behind the rear control panel (reach behind the middle of the panel for a metal flag); on lift-up cooktop styles, under the cooktop; on the left leg behind the drawer or kick panel; or on the front frame inside the drawer.
Wall ovens: inside the door, on the front face.
Dishwashers: the left front inside edge, the right front inside edge, or the right side edge of the door.
Front-load washers: inside the door panel on the wash-compartment face, or on the exterior right side at the lower front corner.
Top-load washers: under the lid near the right hinge, on the back of the control panel, at the bottom left corner, or on the back near the water inlets.
Dryers: inside the front face of the dryer compartment, on the left or right side, with the door open.

Parts and compatibility

GE Profile parts are sold by model number, and for many components by serial range within a model. In Canada they come through GE Appliances' distribution here, and a U.S. parts listing does not always match a Canadian model. Profile parts that tend to be model-specific include main and user-interface control boards, Wi-Fi modules, dispenser and Autofill assemblies, ice makers, convection fans and dishwasher fan-dry parts. A replacement control board can also need the correct software for your model, so it has to be the right board, not just one that fits.

We buy parts through Canadian distributors, and availability varies: common Profile parts are often easy to get, while newer models, heat-pump dryer parts and combo-unit parts can take longer or be back-ordered. Is GE Profile made by GE or Haier?

GE Profile is a line from GE Appliances, which Haier has owned since June 2016. The GE name is used under a trademark agreement. In Canada, GE Appliances points owners to its authorized distributor, Mabe Canada Inc., for manufacturer service and parts.

What is the difference between GE and GE Profile?

They come from the same company and often share a platform. Profile models add features such as Wi-Fi through SmartHQ, air fry and Precision Cooking modes, Autofill dispensers and fan-assisted dishwasher drying. Those extra parts are why a Profile repair usually needs the exact model number.

Where is the model number on a GE Profile dishwasher?

Open the door and check the left or right front inside edge of the tub, or the right side edge of the door. The model number begins and ends with a letter.

My GE Profile won't connect to Wi-Fi. Is that a repair?

Usually not at first. GE Appliances runs a Connected Home Support line (1-800-220-6899) for SmartHQ setup and software updates. If the appliance also shows a fault, or the Wi-Fi module or control board has failed, that is a hardware repair we can diagnose.

Do you repair GE Profile heat-pump dryers and UltraFast combos?

Yes, we diagnose them. Lint and airflow problems, drain issues, sensors and boards are normal repairs. Refrigerant work on the heat-pump circuit is done for us by a certified refrigeration technician. Send the model number so we can check parts before the visit.
