Fridge not cold but freezer works

Short answer

When the freezer stays frozen but the fridge side warms up, the cold is usually being made but not delivered.

Urgent Health Canada says a fridge should hold 4 °C (40 °F) or lower; once the fresh-food side sits above that, milk, meat and leftovers are at risk within hours.

Quick answer

What this symptom usually means

When the freezer stays frozen but the fridge side warms up, the cold is usually being made but not delivered. In most frost-free fridges a single cooling coil (the evaporator) sits behind the freezer's back panel, and a fan pushes that cold air into the fresh-food section through vents or an air damper. Whirlpool puts it simply: air must be able to flow freely between the refrigerator and freezer compartments. So a warm fridge with a cold freezer often means something is interrupting that flow: food packed against the vents, vents covered in frost (Samsung says frost or ice on the back-wall vents has to be cleared), a fan that has stopped, a damper stuck closed, or an evaporator so frosted over that air can't pass through it.

Before assuming a part has failed, rule out the simple causes. GE lists the temperature control, tall containers blocking the airflow, doors or gaskets that don't seal, and an interior light that stays on. Whirlpool adds a room colder than 13 °C (55 °F) or warmer than 43 °C (110 °F), a recent power cut that left cooling switched off, a showroom mode left on, and a big load of warm groceries, which can take several hours to settle. If the settings, vents and doors are all fine and the fridge keeps climbing, the fault is most likely in the air-delivery or defrost system, which needs a technician.

Stop and call if: The fridge side has been above 4 °C for more than a few hours with perishable food inside (move it to a cooler); Water or ice spreading onto the floor; A burning or electrical smell, or a breaker that trips again.

Checks you can do yourself

  1. Measure the real temperaturePut a thermometer in a glass of water on the middle shelf and read it after a few hours with the doors closed. Health Canada's targets are 4 °C (40 °F) or lower for the fridge and −18 °C (0 °F) or lower for the freezer. A number is more useful to us than "it feels warm".
  2. Check the settingLG suggests 1 to 3 °C (34 to 37 °F) for the fresh-food side. GE says to move a dial one number higher for colder, or one degree lower on models that show the actual temperature. Whirlpool says to wait 24 hours between changes before judging the result.
  3. Clear the ventsMove tall containers forward, as GE advises, and keep food about 5 cm (2 in) from the vents, which is Samsung's guidance. Whirlpool suggests small gaps between containers and not stacking items too high. Look at the vents at the back and top of the fresh-food section for frost or ice.
  4. Doors, gaskets and the lightGE says the doors should swing shut on their own from halfway open. Check that nothing on a shelf or door bin is holding a door off its gasket, and press the light switch by hand: GE warns that a light that stays on keeps the fridge from cooling properly.
  5. Rule out modes and power cutsWhirlpool says cooling may need to be switched back on after a power loss, and that a showroom (demo) mode keeps the lights working while cooling stays off. Check the display and your manual for either.
  6. Listen near the freezer's back wallWith the doors shut, listen for the soft whir of the freezer fan. Silence while the compressor is running, or a scraping or ticking sound, is worth noting for the technician. Don't remove the back panel to look.
  7. Room and locationWhirlpool rates its fridges for rooms between 13 °C and 43 °C (55 °F and 110 °F) and warns against placing one beside an oven or radiator, blocking the base grille, or installing it behind a cabinet door.

Nothing above involves gas, wiring, refrigerant or removing panels.

Most likely causes

What you notice, and what it can point to

Listed in no particular order. They help you describe the problem; only an inspection confirms the fault.

You notice

Fridge warm, freezer cold, food pressed against the back wall

Could point to: Vents blocked by containers

Next step: Move food forward, leave gaps, check again after a few hours

You notice

Frost or ice visible on the vents inside the fridge

Could point to: Frosted air channel or a defrost problem

Next step: Samsung says the frost must be cleared; if it comes back, book a technician

You notice

Freezer's back panel frosted white, fridge getting warmer by the day

Could point to: Defrost system not clearing the evaporator

Next step: Protect the food and book; see frost buildup

You notice

Compressor runs but no fan sound behind the freezer panel

Could point to: Evaporator fan stopped

Next step: Book a diagnosis; note what you heard

You notice

Fridge warm after a power cut, display on

Could point to: Cooling switched off, or a mode left on

Next step: Check the display and manual; switch cooling back on

You notice

Fridge warm only in summer or after a big shop

Could point to: Heavy load or warm room

Next step: Give it several hours; keep the doors closed; check the room isn't above 43 °C

How it differs by design

  • Bottom freezer and French door: the cold air has to travel up from the freezer below, through a channel in the back wall, into the fresh-food section. Frost in that channel, or vents blocked at the top of the fridge, can leave the freezer fine and the fridge warm.
  • Side-by-side: air passes through openings in the wall between the two halves. Whirlpool stresses that air must flow freely between the compartments, so don't pack items tight against the dividing wall on either side.
  • Top freezer: cold air drops from the freezer into the fridge through a vent, often controlled by a dial or damper in the fresh-food section. A dial turned to its warmest setting can look like a fault.
  • Models with two evaporators: some higher-end fridges cool each section with its own coil. On those, a cold freezer tells you less about the fridge side, and the technician checks each system separately.
On the visit

What our technician checks

These need panels off, live electrical tests or a licensed trade, so they are left to the technician:

  • Removing the freezer's back panel to reach the evaporator, fan or defrost heater
  • Chipping or heating ice off the evaporator (it can puncture the coil)
  • Testing the fan, damper, sensors or control board with meters
  • Anything involving refrigerant

Common parts involved

Repairs a technician may recommend

After inspection, not from the symptom alone.

Repair

Evaporator fan motor replacement

When the fan behind the freezer panel has stopped or is dragging, so cold air stays in the freezer. The technician confirms it runs, or doesn't, when the control calls for cooling.

Repair

Defrost system repair

When the evaporator is packed with frost because the defrost heater, its thermostat or sensor, or the defrost control isn't clearing it. A heavily frosted evaporator blocks the air on its way to the fridge. See excessive frost buildup.

Repair

Air damper repair or replacement

On models that meter freezer air into the fresh-food side with a damper, a damper stuck closed, or iced shut, can starve the fridge while the freezer stays cold.

Repair

Temperature sensor or control board diagnosis

When the fridge-side sensor reads wrong or the control never asks for cooling on that side. The technician compares the sensor against a real reading before replacing anything.

Repair

Door gasket or hinge adjustment

When a fresh-food door that doesn't seal is letting in more warm air than the system can remove.

Repair

Sealed-system diagnosis

Less likely when the freezer is fully cold, but the technician rules it out if the airflow and defrost checks pass. RepairWell diagnoses it; refrigerant work is done by a certified refrigeration technician we work with.

Brand-specific

Brands we see with this problem

Codes, parts and access differ by brand; the brand pages cover where the model label is and what to expect.

Repair or replace

Cost, and whether to fix it

What the repair costs depends on the part, the labour and whether a second visit is needed for an ordered part; the written finding gives the total before any work. Our guides on what drives repair costs, refrigerator repair costs and repair versus replacement explain how to weigh it.

When to book

Book if the fridge side is above 4 °C a day after you've checked the setting, cleared the vents and confirmed the doors seal, or sooner if food is at risk. Tell us the fridge style (bottom freezer, French door, side-by-side or top freezer), the thermometer reading in each section, and whether you've seen frost on the vents or heard the fan. If the freezer's back wall is thick with frost, don't try to chip it off. The visit is $89 with a written finding, waived if you go ahead with the repair. Refrigerator repair explains what the diagnosis covers.

Questions

Fridge not cold but freezer works: questions

Why is my fridge not cold but my freezer is?

In most frost-free fridges, the fresh-food side is cooled by air blown up or across from the freezer. If that air is blocked by food or frost, or the fan that moves it stops, the freezer stays cold while the fridge warms. Clear the vents first; if that doesn't help, it is a technician's job.

How long can food stay in a fridge that isn't cold?

Health Canada says the fridge should be at 4 °C (40 °F) or lower to keep food out of the range where bacteria multiply quickly. If a thermometer shows the fridge well above that for hours, move perishables to a cooler with ice or to the freezer while you sort out the cause.

Can I fix a fridge that isn't cooling by defrosting it?

Letting a frosted-up fridge defrost fully, with the food moved out, can bring cooling back for a while. If the defrost system has a fault, the frost usually returns, and the fridge will warm up again. Treat it as a stopgap until the diagnosis.

Is it the evaporator fan if my fridge is warm but the freezer is cold?

It may be. A stopped fan is one of the common causes, along with a frosted evaporator and a stuck damper. A technician confirms which by checking the fan, the frost pattern and the defrost parts before quoting.

How long does a fridge take to cool down after I change the setting?

Whirlpool says to wait 24 hours between adjustments. Samsung says a fridge can take up to 28 hours to reach its set temperature if the doors stay closed, for example after installation.
