Fridge door not sealing or sweating
A fridge door that doesn't seal and a fridge that sweats are often the same problem seen from two sides.
Soon Sweating in humid weather is often normal, but a door that doesn't seal lets warm air in, which Whirlpool says leads to frost and temperature swings.
What this symptom usually means
A fridge door that doesn't seal and a fridge that sweats are often the same problem seen from two sides. Whirlpool says a door that doesn't seal causes frost buildup and temperature swings, and can stop the door switch working. The usual reasons are something in the way (a package, a door bin or a crisper cover not pushed fully in), a dirty or sticky gasket, a fridge that isn't level, or a gasket that has gone brittle, cracked or warped. Whirlpool also says doors reinstalled after a move may not line up, and that on French-door fridges the vertical flap on the left door must fold inward before the doors close, or it holds a door open.
Moisture on the outside is condensation: warm, humid room air meeting a cool surface. LG says condensation on the gasket is normal in summer when indoor humidity is high, and that a fridge next to a balcony door or window gets more of it. In an Ottawa or Gatineau summer, a kitchen without air conditioning can be humid enough to bead water on a healthy fridge. GE explains that many fridges have small anti-sweat heaters around the freezer opening or between the fresh-food doors, and that an Energy Saver setting turns them off. GE also points to tight clearance to the cabinets beside or above the fridge, and splits or gaps in the gaskets. Sweating that stays in one spot, or comes with frost inside, points back to the seal.
Checks you can do yourself
- Do the paper testClose the door on a paper bill and pull it out. Samsung describes this test; the seal should grip the bill so you feel some resistance. Try it on all four sides of each door, including the hinge side.
- Clean the gasketWhirlpool says the gasket needs regular cleaning. LG suggests hot water and a toothbrush or sponge, then drying it with a towel. Sticky residue makes a gasket drag and fold instead of sealing.
- Look for anything in the wayPush bins, shelves and crisper covers fully into place and move packages back from the door, as Whirlpool and LG advise. Check that nothing, such as a bag edge, is caught in the seal.
- Check the levelWhirlpool says to level the fridge side to side and front to back, and to check the floor too, since shims may be needed. On most models, doors close on their own more easily when the front sits slightly higher; your manual gives the method.
- Reseat a loose gasketIf a section of gasket droops or has come out of its groove, LG says to press it back into the groove. A gasket that is torn or flattened needs replacing.
- Fold the French-door flap inIf the left door's vertical flap is turned outward, fold it inward by hand before closing, as Whirlpool describes.
- Check the Energy Saver and clearanceIf the outside of the cabinet sweats, GE suggests turning Energy Saver off, or a Humidity control on, in humid weather. Make sure there is air space at the sides and top as your installation guide asks. Wipe condensation dry, as LG suggests.

How it differs by design
- French door: the flap (mullion) on the left door seals the gap between the two doors. Whirlpool says it must fold inward before closing. GE says condensation on the flap is common in humid weather and suggests turning a Humidity control on or Energy Saver off, if your model has one.
- Side-by-side: two tall doors with long gaskets. A door that sags on its hinge often shows first as a gap at the top or bottom corner.
- Bottom-freezer drawers: a basket or ice bin that isn't seated can stop the drawer closing fully, which Whirlpool lists among the causes of doors not closing.
- Energy Saver and anti-sweat controls: GE says some models have a mechanical switch and others a touch pad. The heaters use a little more energy, so GE suggests Energy Saver during drier months and off in humid ones.

How do I know if my fridge door seal is bad?
Close the door on a paper bill and pull it out, the test Samsung describes. You should feel the seal grip it. If it slides out easily somewhere, clean that part of the gasket and try again; if it still slides out, the gasket or the door alignment needs attention.
Why is my fridge sweating on the outside?
Warm, humid air condenses on the cool surface. GE says turning off the Energy Saver setting switches on small heaters that keep the cabinet front warm enough to prevent it. Tight clearance to the cabinets and gasket gaps can also cause it.
Is condensation on the fridge normal in summer?
Some is. LG says condensation on the door gasket is normal in summer when indoor humidity is high. Air conditioning or a dehumidifier in the kitchen helps. Heavy sweating in dry weather is not normal.
Can I replace a fridge door gasket myself?
Cleaning and reseating a gasket in its groove are safe owner tasks. Replacing one usually means loosening screws under the door liner and getting the door square again, and a poorly fitted gasket can leak worse than the old one. We do it as part of the repair.
Why won't my fridge door close by itself?
Whirlpool lists a fridge that isn't level, overfilled door bins, bins or drawers not seated, and a dirty gasket. On French-door models, the centre flap may be folded outward. Check those before booking.
