Washer not spinning
Soon A washer that won't spin leaves loads too wet to dry and often isn't draining either; it's not a hazard, but it stops the laundry entirely.
What this symptom might mean
Washers refuse to spin for protective reasons more often than mechanical ones. Almost every model will not spin with the lid or door open, and a lid switch or door lock that no longer registers closed produces exactly this symptom. An unbalanced load (one heavy towel, a duvet, or a very small load) makes the machine try to redistribute, and if it can't, it finishes the cycle at low speed or not at all; GE's top loaders flash a balance message while they try. Gentle and delicate cycles spin slowly on purpose. And a washer that hasn't drained can't spin, so a blocked pump filter or a kinked hose shows up as a spin problem first.
If those are ruled out, the drive is the next suspect. On belt-driven machines the belt can stretch or snap; on top loaders the clutch, the motor coupling or the transmission can wear; on direct-drive front loaders the motor's sensor or the control can fail, and the drum turns freely by hand but won't spin under power. A motor that runs while the tub stays still is GE's line in the sand for professional service. Suds, overloading and a machine that isn't level all make the balance problem worse.
Safe checks you can do first
- Rebalance the load. Open the lid, spread the load evenly around the drum, split a single heavy item with a few lighter ones, or add a couple of towels to a very small load. Run a drain-and-spin. Whirlpool and GE both start here.
- Cycle and speed. Check the cycle selected. Delicate, hand-wash and some wool cycles spin slowly or barely at all. Pick a normal or heavy cycle with a high spin setting and try again.
- Lid or door. Close it firmly and listen for the lock. Top loaders won't spin with the lid up. If the strike is bent or the lid doesn't sit flat, note it for us.
- Did it drain?. If there's still water in the drum, this is a drain problem first. Follow washer not draining, including the pump filter on front loaders.
- Level and feet. Rock the washer from the top corners. If it moves, adjust the feet until it doesn't; an unlevel washer trips the balance sensor early.
- Reset. Unplug for one to five minutes, plug back in and run a spin-only cycle. GE and Whirlpool both suggest a power reset when a cycle has been interrupted or a control message is stuck.
Nothing above involves gas, wiring, refrigerant or removing panels. Those are technician-only: Removing the cabinet or back panel to reach the belt, motor or transmission; Any electrical test on the motor, lid switch or control; Replacing suspension components under the tub.
Repairs a technician may recommend
After inspection, not from the symptom alone.
- Lid switch or door lock replacement. When the washer never proceeds to spin and doesn't register the lid or door as closed. A common and moderate repair.
- Drive belt replacement. When the motor runs and the drum doesn't turn, or the belt is glazed, stretched or shredded.
- Motor coupling, clutch or transmission repair. On top loaders where the drum agitates but won't spin, or spins weakly.
- Drain pump replacement. When the machine can't reach spin because it never finishes draining.
- Motor, motor control board or hall sensor replacement. On direct-drive machines where the motor doesn't run, or runs then faults out.
- Suspension rod or damper replacement. When the tub is out of balance no matter how the load is arranged, so the machine keeps aborting spin.
When to book
Book if a balanced, normal-cycle load still comes out dripping, if the drum doesn't turn while the motor is clearly running, if you smell burning rubber, or if the washer spins some loads and not others no matter what you do. If the drum is also full of water, tell us so we plan for a drain fault too. Mention front or top loader and the age of the machine; on an older top loader a transmission fault may be the point where we advise replacement, and the written finding gives both numbers. The visit is $89, waived if you proceed. See washing machine repair.
Questions
Why does my washer spin some loads but not others?
Usually balance. Big single items and tiny loads are hardest to balance, and a machine with worn suspension gives up sooner than it used to. If it happens on every load, or with a well-balanced load, the lid switch or drive is more likely.
The washer agitates but won't spin. What does that mean?
On a top loader that pattern often points at the clutch, motor coupling or transmission, or the lid switch on models that allow agitation with the lid open but not spin. A technician confirms which before ordering anything.
Is it worth repairing a washer that won't spin?
A lid switch, belt, coupling or pump is usually worth doing at any reasonable age. A transmission or motor on a machine well past ten years often isn't, and we'll say so in the finding.
Can I open the door mid-spin to fix the balance?
On front loaders the door locks during spin and shouldn't be forced. Press pause and wait for the lock to release; on many models that takes a minute or two after the drum stops.
