GE washer repair and error codes
RepairWell repairs GE top-load and front-load washers in Ottawa and Gatineau as an independent service. We are not authorized by GE Appliances; a washer still under GE's warranty should go to GE Appliances Canada first. This page explains the messages GE's own support articles describe and the checks GE asks owners to make.
GE washers report problems differently from most brands. Instead of a long table of numbered fault codes, GE's 2017 and newer washers with electronic controls use what GE calls a Consumer Help Indicator: plain-word messages such as H2O SUPPLY or CAnCELEd that scroll across the display, sometimes followed by a 4-minute lockout during which the controls will not respond. We found few numbered washer codes on GE's owner pages; the GE Profile UltraFast combo washer-dryer is the exception, with a short list of its own.
RepairWell is an independent repair service and is not affiliated with or authorized by GE.
GE washing machine error codes
The messages below come from GE Appliances' support articles on products.geappliances.com: the Consumer Help Indicator list, the top-load washer display and status light guide, the front-load door lock article, and the fault list for the GE Profile UltraFast Combo. GE says messages vary by model and points owners to the owner's manual for their model. Some entries apply only to certain designs: GE's videos for dE and UE refer to its space-saving top-load washers, and 18, 353 and the pump-filter message come from the combo washer-dryer.
A lockout is not a fault. When H2O SUPPLY or CAnCELEd starts to scroll, GE says the washer locks its controls for 4 minutes, and unplugging it only restarts the 4-minute timer. Wait it out before deciding anything is wrong.
| Code | What GE says it means | Checks GE lists for owners | When to book | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| H2O SUPPLY, IE, or Wash and Rinse lights blinking | Water is not entering the washer; on top-loaders GE describes H2O SUPPLY as the washer being unable to sense the water level. | Check the house water supply. GE asks whether one or both supply valves were left off after installation or after a holiday. When the message starts to scroll, the controls lock for 4 minutes; after that you can start the cycle again. Unplugging the washer restarts the 4-minute timer. | Book if both supply valves are fully open and the message comes back. | GE Appliances |
| Spin light blinking, or Spin and Rinse lights blinking | The washer has detected an out-of-balance load and is working to correct it. In some cases it cannot balance the load and does not reach full spin speed. | If the load is wetter than normal at the end of the cycle, spread it evenly in the basket and run a Drain and Spin or Spin cycle. On the models GE describes, you run Spin by selecting Normal and pressing Process until only the Spin light is on. | Book if evenly spread, normal-sized loads keep ending wet or the washer bangs during spin. | GE Appliances |
| bALAnCINg | Not a fault: the washer has started a rebalancing routine to redistribute the clothes. The message stops when rebalancing is complete. | Let the routine finish. | Book only if the washer rebalances on almost every load. | GE Appliances |
| UE | The laundry load is unbalanced. | Reposition the laundry evenly in the basket and make sure the washer is level. | Book if UE keeps appearing with even loads on a level washer. | GE Appliances |
| CAnCELEd | The washer was paused for longer than 24 hours, or it stopped itself before the cycle finished because of certain errors. | Wait out the 4-minute lockout, then start the cycle again. Unplugging the washer restarts the timer. | GE says to contact service if the problem persists; book if CAnCELEd keeps ending normal cycles. | GE Appliances |
| Lid (with the Lid or Lid Locked light) | Three cycles have been started without the lid being opened. The washer will not start another cycle until the lid is opened. | Open the lid, close it, and start a new cycle. | Book if the message stays after the lid has been opened and closed. | GE Appliances |
| LId or dE | The lid is open. On the top-load display, GE says the cycle has stopped because the lid is open. | Close the lid. | Book if the message stays with the lid fully closed. | GE Appliances |
| FE | Water has reached a critical level in the washer. | GE's instruction is to turn off the water and the power to the washer and call service. GE lists no owner fix for this message. | Book immediately, and leave the water and power off until the visit. | GE Appliances |
| Lock icon | The controls are locked. The icon blinks once if you press a button or turn the cycle knob. | GE's display guide does not give the unlock sequence; it is in the owner's manual for your model. | No booking needed unless the controls stay locked after following the manual. | GE Appliances |
| Spin Stop light | Not a fault: the wash basket is coasting to a stop after a spin. The lid will not unlock until the basket has fully stopped. | Wait for the basket to stop. | Book if the lid stays locked long after the basket has stopped. | GE Appliances |
| LOCKED (front-load) | The door is locked because the washer is running. GE says the door locks automatically when the washer starts. | Press Start/Pause to pause the washer; GE says the door takes a few seconds to unlock, and in some cycles the washer drains first. At the start of a cycle the door may lock and unlock before water flows, which is normal. GE warns not to force the door open while LOCKED is on, as this could damage the washer. | Book if the door stays locked after a pause and a complete drain. | GE Appliances |
| 18 (GE Profile UltraFast Combo) | The pump filter needs to be cleaned. GE says you may also notice very wet loads at the end of a wash or longer drying times. | Clean the drain pump filter as your owner's manual describes. GE also says to make sure the drain hose is not pushed too far down into the standpipe, which can stop the combo draining properly. | Book if 18 returns with a clean pump filter and a correctly placed drain hose. | GE Appliances |
| Check and Clean Drain Pump Filter (GE Profile UltraFast Combo) | The combo has detected a restriction in the drain area. GE says loose items caught in the pump filter often cause it. | Clean the pump filter following the Care and Cleaning section of your owner's manual. | Book if the message returns right after the filter has been cleaned. | GE Appliances |
| 353 (GE Profile UltraFast Combo) | Most often, the lint filter is clogged with fabric softener residue. | Separate the foam filter from the plastic mesh screen. Rinse the foam with warm water and clean the screen with water and a soft-bristled brush. Refit the lint filter and run a wash-and-dry cycle. | Book if 353 returns with a clean lint filter. | GE Appliances |

Symptom guides for GE washing machines
Finding the model and serial number
GE's model and serial number locator lists these spots. Top-load washer: under the lid near the right hinge, on the back of the control panel, at the bottom left corner of the cabinet, or on the back near the water inlets. Front-load washer: inside the door on the face of the wash compartment, or on the right side of the cabinet at the lower front corner. GE says its model numbers always begin and end with a letter, and some newer labels carry a QR code you can scan. For the recalls above, compare both the model and the serial number.
What's specific to GE washing machines
Front-load pump filter. GE says most of its front-load washers have a pump filter behind an access cover at the bottom front, and that models without front access need service to reach it. GE's steps: open the access door with a coin or flat screwdriver in the notch, set a shallow pan and towels down (about a cup of water is normal), pull down the pour spout, and turn the filter counterclockwise slowly to let the water drain. Clean out the debris, turn the filter back clockwise until secure, flip the spout up and close the door. GE also links a clogged drain pump to a front-loader that shakes or vibrates. Let a hot wash cool before you open the filter.
Top-load filters. GE says its top-load washers made in 2001 and later have no filter to clean: lint is carried out with the water through the pump, and there is no owner access to the pump. The exception is its Spacemaker or space-saving top-load models made since 2014, which have lint filters in the wash basket that the owner can remove and clean. If your older GE top-loader will not drain, that is a technician's job, not a filter to find.
Drain hose and siphoning. GE's front-load troubleshooting says to use the drain hose clip, also called an anti-siphon clip, supplied with the washer, and warns that a hose pushed too far down the standpipe or taped to it can siphon water out of the washer. GE adds that a clogged household drain needs a plumber. Washer and dryer installation covers the hookup.
Shipping bolts and levelling. For a front-loader that shakes or walks, GE says to check that the shipping bolts and braces were removed: if you press on the drum and it will not move, they are probably still in. Keep the levelling legs as short as possible, firmly on the floor and locked. GE says occasional movement of up to 1/4 in (about 6 mm) during an out-of-balance spin can be normal, because the washer is designed to move to reduce the force on the floor.
UltraFresh Vent and Self Clean. On front-loaders with UltraFresh Vent with OdorBlock, GE says the door stays locked and the basket spins at low speed on and off for up to 8 hours after a cycle to dry the gasket and tub; a locked door during that time is not a fault. GE recommends its Self Clean cycle at least once a month or about every 40 cycles, with 1 cup (250 ml) of liquid bleach, vinegar or washer cleaner poured into the empty basket. Suds after Self Clean, GE says, usually come from detergent build-up; use HE detergent and less of it.
Recalls and notices
Health Canada has published three recalls of GE-brand washers. All are older, and each covers specific models only, not GE washers in general.
- 10 June 2010: GE front-load washers without auxiliary water heating, model numbers beginning GBVH5 with the serial prefixes listed in the notice, made December 2006 to February 2010. The notice says a wire could break and touch a metal part on the washtub, posing fire and shock hazards. Recall notice.
- 3 October 2012: GE Profile front-load washers with model numbers beginning WPDH8800 or WPDH8900, made June 2008 to May 2010. The notice says the basket seam could separate during the final spin; until repaired, owners were told to set the spin speed to Medium or Low. Recall notice.
- 15 September 2016: GE Profile Harmony high-efficiency top-load washers made June 2003 to October 2010; only model WPGT9150 was sold in Canada. The notice says the main circuit board could malfunction and overheat, posing a smoke and fire hazard. Recall notice.
The notices direct owners to the company then handling GE repairs in Canada (Mabe, also named as MC Commercial Inc.) for a free repair. Recall work is done by the manufacturer's program, not by RepairWell. Contact details in older notices may have changed; GE Appliances Canada keeps a recall information page that lists these washers. We searched the Government of Canada Recalls and safety alerts database, including its open-data export current to 24 September 2026, on 25 September 2026. A recall is a formal safety action published by Health Canada. A service bulletin is a manufacturer's repair note for technicians, and a complaint is an owner's report; neither is a recall, and none of the above means a given washer is faulty.
When to book
Book straight away for FE, for water on the floor, or for a front-load door that stays locked with water in the drum. For H2O SUPPLY and CAnCELEd, wait out the 4-minute lockout and try GE's checks first; book if the message returns. For out-of-balance messages, rebalance and level the washer first, and book if even loads still end wet. Tell us the exact message, whether it is a top-loader, front-loader or combo, and the model number. The diagnostic is $89 plus tax, waived when you go ahead with the repair, with a written finding and quote before any work.
GE washing machine questions
What does H2O SUPPLY mean on a GE washer?
GE says water is not getting into the washer. Check that both supply valves are fully open, especially after an installation or a holiday. The washer then locks its controls for 4 minutes, and unplugging it restarts that timer, so wait before trying again.
Why is my GE washer showing CAnCELEd and not responding?
GE says CAnCELEd appears if the washer was paused for more than 24 hours or stopped itself before the cycle finished because of certain errors. The controls lock for 4 minutes after the message starts. After that, start the cycle again; if it keeps happening, book a technician.
Why is the Spin light blinking on my GE washer?
GE says the washer has detected an out-of-balance load and is trying to correct it. If the clothes are wetter than usual at the end, spread them evenly and run a Drain and Spin cycle. Book if it happens with most normal loads.
How do I unlock my GE front-load washer door?
Press Start/Pause. GE says the door unlocks after a few seconds, and in some cycles only after the washer drains. Do not force it while LOCKED is showing; GE warns that can damage the washer.
Where is the filter on a GE top-load washer?
GE says its top-loaders made since 2001 do not have an owner-cleanable filter; lint goes out with the drain water. Spacemaker or space-saving models made since 2014 are the exception, with removable lint filters in the basket. GE front-loaders have a pump filter behind a cover at the bottom front.
Are you authorized by GE Appliances?
No. RepairWell is independent and not authorized by GE Appliances. Warranty and recall work goes through GE Appliances Canada.
