Washer not filling, filling slowly or wrong water temperature
Manufacturers start their fill checks outside the washer.
Not urgent A washer that won't fill is an inconvenience rather than a hazard, but check the hoses for leaks after you reconnect them, and stop if water appears under the machine.

What this symptom usually means
Manufacturers start their fill checks outside the washer. Whirlpool and GE both begin with the taps: both hot and cold must be fully open, and the hoses mustn't be kinked. The next suspect is the pair of small screens where the hoses attach to the back of the washer. GE and LG say minerals and debris collect there and slow or stop the flow. Low household water pressure does the same; LG's pages give different pressure ranges by model and region (for example 20 to 120 psi, or 138 to 827 kPa, on LG Canada's page), so check your manual, and Whirlpool says anti-flood devices on the hoses can cut the pressure and flow. Some models give up if the fill takes too long: GE says some models time out after 20 to 40 minutes, and LG's IE error appears when water doesn't reach level within 8 minutes.
Sometimes the washer is filling but the water leaves as fast as it arrives. Whirlpool lists a drain hose pushed too far into the standpipe, or a standpipe lower than 99 cm (39 in), as a reason water siphons out. And some complaints aren't faults at all. Whirlpool and LG point out that high-efficiency washers use far less water than older machines, and cycles like Bulky can fill in stages over 10 to 12 minutes. If the water is the wrong temperature, the cause may be the hoses swapped, one half of the inlet valve failing (GE), a clogged screen on one side, or simply cold incoming water in winter.
Checks you can do yourself
- Taps fully openOpen both the hot and cold supply taps all the way. Whirlpool says both hoses must be connected for the washer to operate correctly.
- Hoses straight and the right way roundPull the washer out gently and make sure the hoses aren't kinked or crushed. Check the hot hose goes to the H inlet and the cold to C; GE lists reversed hoses as a cause of wrong temperatures.
- Inlet screensUnplug the washer, turn off the taps, and unscrew the hoses from the back into a bucket. If the screens in the inlets are clogged, brush them clean. Whirlpool says to clean them in place without removing them; GE and LG describe pulling them out with pliers. Follow your own manual, and replace a hose that is blocked inside.
- Anti-flood devicesIf a flood-stop device is fitted between the tap and the hose, Whirlpool says it can reduce pressure and flow. Note it for the technician rather than removing it yourself.
- Drain hose positionIf water seems to disappear during the fill, check the drain hose isn't pushed deep into the standpipe or taped in. Whirlpool gives 113 mm (4.5 in) in the standpipe and a minimum standpipe height of 99 cm (39 in); LG says no more than 20 cm (8 in). Check your manual.
- Controls and cycleMake sure the cycle wasn't paused and, on dial models, that the knob is set at the start of a cycle. On electronic models, try a Drain and Spin, or unplug for a minute, if the display shows an error.
- Winter storageIf the washer sat somewhere below freezing, GE says water in the pump can freeze and lock it. Let it warm up before trying again.
Nothing above involves gas, wiring, refrigerant or removing panels.
What you notice, and what it can point to
Listed in no particular order. They help you describe the problem; only an inspection confirms the fault.
No water at all, washer otherwise powers on
Could point to: Taps closed, hoses kinked, screens blocked, or inlet valve fault
Next step: Open taps fully, straighten hoses, clean screens; then book
Fills very slowly or stops with a water-supply error
Could point to: Low water pressure, clogged screens, or anti-flood device
Next step: Clean screens; check house pressure; book if it continues
Only a little water in an HE washer
Could point to: Normal low-water design for that cycle and load
Next step: Use a Deep Fill or Water Plus option if your model has one
Water comes in, then drains away during the fill
Could point to: Drain hose too deep in the standpipe or standpipe too low
Next step: Reset the hose depth per your manual
Cold water when warm or hot is selected
Could point to: Hoses reversed, hot-side screen blocked, valve half failed, or cold winter supply
Next step: Check hose connections and screens; book if one side never fills
How it differs by design
- High-efficiency top loaders use much less water than agitator machines. Whirlpool says water level depends on the cycle and load size, and many models offer Deep Water Wash, Water Plus or Deep Fill options for more water. LG warns that adding water by hand isn't a fix.
- Front loaders: GE says some models time out if the fill takes longer than 20 to 40 minutes, usually from low pressure or clogged screens, so a front loader that stops with a water-supply error points to the supply first.
- Mechanical dials vs electronic controls: on GE mechanical models the timer knob must be pulled out and set at the start of the cycle; some GE electronic top loaders lock the controls for 3 to 4 minutes after a water-supply error.
- Temperature control: Whirlpool says its washers start every fill with cold water and sense temperature at the bottom of the tub, adding hot or warm as needed. GE says the hot setting is only as hot as the house supply reaching the washer.
What our technician checks
These need panels off, live electrical tests or a licensed trade, so they are left to the technician:
- Removing the back or top panel to reach the inlet valve
- Electrical tests on the valve, pressure sensor or control board
- Changes to household water pressure or the standpipe (a plumber)

Repairs a technician may recommend
After inspection, not from the symptom alone.
Water inlet valve replacement
When the screens are clean and the taps are open but no water, or only hot or only cold, comes in. GE says one half of the valve can fail.
Inlet screen or fill hose replacement
When screens can't be cleaned or a hose is blocked or damaged.
Water-level (pressure) sensor or control diagnosis
When the washer fills but doesn't sense the level, stops early, or times out with good pressure.
Drain hose re-routing
When siphoning from a hose set too deep or a low standpipe is emptying the tub during the fill. If the standpipe itself needs changing, that is plumbing work.
Lid or door lock check
On models that won't begin a cycle until the lid or door locks. See washer not starting.

Cost, and whether to fix it
What the repair costs depends on the part, the labour and whether a second visit is needed for an ordered part; the written finding gives the total before any work. Our guides on what drives repair costs, washing machine repair costs and repair versus replacement explain how to weigh it.
When to book
Book if the taps are fully open, the hoses are straight, the screens are clean and the washer still won't fill, fills only hot or only cold, or keeps showing a water-supply error. Tell us whether it's a top or front loader, any code on the display, and whether water comes in slowly or not at all. The visit is $89 with a written finding, waived if you go ahead with the repair. Washing machine repair explains what the diagnosis includes.

Washer not filling, filling slowly or wrong water temperature: questions
Why does my new washer use so little water?
High-efficiency washers are designed that way. Whirlpool and LG both say water level depends on the cycle and load size, and many models have Deep Water Wash, Water Plus or Deep Fill if you want more. LG advises against adding water by hand.
Why is my cold wash sometimes warm, and my warm wash cold?
Whirlpool says its washers sense the tub temperature and add hot water if the tap water is very cold, which happens in cold regions. GE says warm is a mix of hot and cold, so in winter it runs cooler. If one side never fills at all, that is a fault.
How hot should the water heater be for the washer?
GE says the household water heater should deliver water at 32 to 49 °C (90 to 120 °F) to the washer. The Hot setting can only be as hot as the water that reaches it.
Can I remove the inlet screens to clean them?
Manufacturers differ. Whirlpool says to brush them clean without removing them; GE and LG describe removing them with pliers. Follow your model's manual, and turn the taps off and unplug the washer first.
My washer shows a water supply code. What does that mean?
Code meanings vary by brand and model, so check the manual. LG's IE code, for example, means the water didn't reach level within 8 minutes. Our error-code guide explains how to look codes up.
