The city of Gatineau counted 291,041 people in 126,476 occupied private dwellings in 2021, up 5.4 per cent from 2016, across five sectors merged on 1 January 2002. The Gatineau sector was the most populous of the five former municipalities, which is why the merged city took its name. Its housing is mostly post-war and suburban: bungalows and duplexes from the 1950s to 1970s near Pointe-Gatineau and along boulevard Maloney, then wave after wave of 1980s to 2010s subdivisions in Touraine, Limbour, Côte-d'Azur and Templeton, plus the plexes and small apartment buildings that are typical of Quebec cities and rare on the Ottawa side.
