Built-in refrigerator repair
A built-in refrigerator is fixed to the cabinetry, often sits behind a matching panel, and on many models keeps its compressor and condenser in a compartment at the top behind a grille rather than at the back. All of that changes how it is serviced: the technician works from the front, the doors may need to come off to reach the panels, and a two-person visit is sometimes required. It also changes the repair-versus-replace maths, because replacing a built-in means matching a cutout and a panel, not just buying a fridge.
This page covers what is different about built-in, integrated and column refrigerators. For the cooling, defrost, ice-maker and noise faults they share with every other fridge, see refrigerator repair.
Online booking is a request; we confirm a window by text or phone within 1 business hour.
Types and configurations we service
- Panel-ready integrated refrigerators — Fully hidden behind cabinet doors; the panel is removed for service and refitted afterwards.
- Column refrigerators and freezers — Separate all-fridge and all-freezer units, often installed side by side with a shared trim kit.
- Built-in French-door and side-by-side — Stainless-front built-ins with top-mounted compressors and front-vented condensers.
- Counter-depth free-standing look-alikes — Not true built-ins; serviced as a standard fridge but often boxed in tightly by cabinetry.
Symptoms we're called for
Possible causes
These are possibilities, not a diagnosis; the technician confirms the cause on site.
- A dust-loaded condenser or a stopped condenser fan in the top compartment, where it is out of sight and rarely cleaned
- A front grille blocked by decorative trim, so the condenser can't breathe
- The same defrost, evaporator-fan and sensor faults found on any refrigerator
- A unit switched to showroom or demo mode after a power event, which GE lists as a check for a fridge that does not cool
- Door hinges and closers that have worn under the weight of a cabinet panel, so the door no longer seals
- A control board or inverter specific to the model, which is often an ordered part
- A sealed-system fault, which only a certified technician can confirm
Repairs a technician may recommend
- Clean the top condenser and replace the condenser fan motor
- Replace the evaporator fan, defrost heater, thermostat or sensor from the front
- Replace the door hinge, closer cam or door gasket and re-align a panel door
- Replace the control board, inverter or display module
- Replace the ice maker, inlet valve or water filter housing
- Clear the defrost drain and reseat the drain pan in the machine compartment
- Sealed-system diagnosis and, where justified, repair by a certified refrigeration technician we work with
Typical components involved: top-mounted compressor, condenser and fan, evaporator, fan and defrost system, control board, inverter and display, door hinges, closers, gaskets and panel brackets, ice maker, valve and filter, toe-kick grille and anti-tip hardware.
Safe checks before you book
- Look at the display for a demo, showroom or Sabbath mode and for a cooling-off setting after a power outage
- Remove the top or toe-kick grille and vacuum the condenser if it is accessible, with the unit powered off
- Make sure nothing decorative is blocking the grille where the condenser breathes
- Check that the panel door closes flush and the gasket meets the cabinet all around
- Give the unit 24 hours after a power outage before judging temperatures
Stop using it if
- A burning smell or a breaker that trips again when reset
- A chemical smell or oily residue in the machine compartment
- Water reaching the cabinetry or the floor under the toe-kick, which damages built-in millwork quickly
- A panel door that has dropped and is scraping or will not close: stop forcing it
Never work on gas lines, wiring, refrigerant or microwave components yourself.
What to expect during diagnosis and repair
The technician checks temperatures and the display, then opens the machine compartment, usually at the top behind the grille, to inspect the condenser, fan and compressor. Evaporator and defrost checks are done from inside the compartments, and the doors or panels are removed only when a repair needs it. Some models require two technicians to remove a door or pull the unit; the finding says so before you commit ([TWO-TECHNICIAN VISIT POLICY TO BE CONFIRMED]). Parts for premium built-ins are usually ordered by model number, so many repairs are two visits.
Repair or replace?
Built-in refrigerators are repaired far more often than they are replaced. The unit was chosen to fit an exact opening with a matching panel, so replacement means cabinetry, panels and often a different model, and the appliances themselves are built for a long service life. Fans, defrost parts, hinges, sensors and even control boards are usually worth it. The exception is a sealed-system failure on an older built-in where the manufacturer no longer supports the model; the finding will show the repair total and, if it applies, that limit.

Pricing factors
The diagnostic visit is $89, waived when you go ahead with the repair, and the quote is given on the spot. What moves the repair price:
- Panel and door removal time, and whether two technicians are needed
- Model-specific boards, inverters and hinges that must be ordered
- Sealed-system work by a certified technician, quoted separately
- Premium brands: For premium built-in brands, ask when you book and we will tell you honestly whether we can help.
- Second appliance on the same visit: If a second appliance is diagnosed on the same visit, it is $45 instead of the full $89.
Brands we service for built-in refrigerators
Brand list subject to confirmation: most major brands, including LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, Bosch, GE, Maytag, Frigidaire, KitchenAid, Electrolux, Kenmore, Amana, Inglis, Miele, Jenn-Air, Fisher & Paykel, Haier and Danby. Independent service; no manufacturer affiliation implied.
Built-in refrigerator questions
Why does a built-in fridge need its own page?
Because the compressor is usually at the top, the unit is fixed to the cabinetry, and the doors carry panels. Diagnosis is from the front, disassembly takes longer, and replacement means cabinetry work. The cooling faults are the same as any fridge.
Do you repair Sub-Zero, Thermador or other premium built-ins?
For premium built-in brands, ask when you book and we will tell you honestly whether we can help. Call with the brand and model; we'll tell you on the phone whether we service it.
Will you need to remove my cabinet panels?
Only when the repair needs it. Panel removal and refitting is planned in the finding, and we tell you in advance if two technicians are required.
The fridge is cooling poorly after a kitchen renovation. Related?
Often. New trim or a decorative grille can block the condenser's air path, and demo mode can be set during the work. Both are early checks.
Is sealed-system work possible on a built-in?
Yes, by certified technicians, and on a built-in it is more often worth doing than on a free-standing fridge.
