Freezer repair

A stand-alone freezer usually lives somewhere you don't look every day: a basement, a garage, a cold room. That is why the first sign of trouble is often a soft bag of peas or a puddle under the door, and by then the freezer may have been struggling for weeks. RepairWell checks the freezer as a system, from the thermostat and door seal to the fan, defrost parts and compressor, and gives you a written finding before quoting anything.

We service upright and chest freezers in homes across Ottawa and Gatineau, including the second freezer in a garage that behaves differently in January than in July. If the cause is a sealed-system fault on an older chest freezer, we say so plainly and the $89 diagnostic is all you pay.

Online booking is a request; we confirm a window by text or phone within 1 business hour.

Types and configurations we service

  • Upright freezers, frost-free — Work like a fridge with a defrost heater, timer and evaporator fan; most calls are defrost faults or a stopped fan.
  • Upright freezers, manual defrost — Simpler: thermostat, compressor, door seal. Heavy frost is usually a seal or usage issue, not a fault.
  • Chest freezers — Very few moving parts; the usual visits are a thermostat, a start relay or a compressor that hums and stops.
  • Garage and cold-room freezers — Many models are not rated for ambient temperatures below about 13 °C (55 °F); we check whether the location, not the freezer, is the problem.
  • Drawer and under-counter freezers — Built into cabinetry; access takes longer and the finding accounts for that.

Possible causes

These are possibilities, not a diagnosis; the technician confirms the cause on site.

  • A thermostat or cold control that no longer switches the compressor on (on many manual-defrost models you can hear a click when it works)
  • A start relay or overload that clicks but never lets the compressor run
  • On frost-free uprights, a failed defrost heater, defrost thermostat or timer that lets ice bury the evaporator coil
  • An evaporator fan that has stopped, so the coil is cold but the cabinet isn't
  • A worn lid or door gasket, a hinge out of line, or a torque-style lid that no longer pulls down flat
  • Dust-packed condenser coils or a freezer pushed tight against a wall, so it can't shed heat
  • A garage freezer in a space that drops below the manufacturer's minimum ambient temperature, which can stop the compressor cycling
  • A refrigerant leak or restriction, which only a certified technician can confirm and which is often the end of the road for an older chest freezer

Repairs a technician may recommend

  • Replace the thermostat or electronic cold control
  • Replace the start relay, overload or run capacitor on the compressor
  • Replace the defrost heater, defrost thermostat or timer and clear the iced coil
  • Replace the evaporator fan motor on frost-free uprights
  • Replace the door or lid gasket, or adjust hinges so the seal closes evenly
  • Clean the condenser and correct clearance, with a note on placement for garage units
  • Replace a temperature sensor or main control on electronic models
  • Sealed-system diagnosis by a certified refrigeration technician we work with; repair only where the finding shows it is worth it

Typical components involved: compressor, start relay and overload, thermostat or electronic cold control, condenser coils (skin-type on many chest freezers), evaporator coil and fan (frost-free uprights), defrost heater, thermostat and timer, door or lid gasket and hinges, interior light and door switch, temperature alarm and control board on electronic models.

Capability note. Sealed-system (refrigerant) work is done for us by a certified refrigeration technician, not by our own staff.

Safe checks before you book

  • Check the control setting; a bumped dial is common on chest freezers, and Whirlpool suggests turning a manual thermostat from lowest to highest and listening for a click
  • Give it 24 hours after any setting change or after a power outage before judging it
  • Make sure the freezer is not packed solid against the back wall or over the fan vents on an upright
  • Wipe the gasket and close the lid on a strip of paper; if the paper slides out with no resistance, note where
  • Vacuum the condenser coils if they are exposed at the back or behind a kick plate, with the freezer unplugged
  • Confirm the outlet is live with a lamp and that a garage GFCI outlet hasn't tripped

Stop using it if

  • A burning smell or a breaker that trips again as soon as it is reset
  • An oily film or a sharp chemical smell around the compressor area
  • The compressor is very hot and the cabinet is at room temperature: unplug it and move the food
  • Water pooling near the outlet or extension cord (garage freezers are often on extension cords, which we don't recommend)

Never work on gas lines, wiring, refrigerant or microwave components yourself.

What to expect during diagnosis and repair

The technician starts by measuring the cabinet temperature and listening to the compressor: running, clicking, or silent tells us where to look first. From there the order is door seal, airflow and frost pattern, then the thermostat, relay and fan, then the defrost circuit on frost-free models. The compressor and sealed system are checked last because they are the most expensive answer. You get the finding in writing with a total before any part is fitted. Relays, thermostats, gaskets and fan motors are frequently on the truck; a defrost heater or control board for a specific model may need ordering. Frozen food stays in the freezer while we work unless we have to thaw the coil, in which case we tell you first.

Repair or replace?

Chest freezers are the clearest repair-versus-replace case we see. A thermostat, relay or gasket is a small repair on a freezer that may otherwise run for years. A sealed-system fault on the same freezer usually isn't, because a basic chest freezer costs less than most refrigerant work. Frost-free uprights sit in between: defrost parts and fans are worth doing, and a compressor on a large upright can still make sense if the cabinet, seal and controls are in good shape. The finding shows the repair total beside what you told us about the freezer's age and use, and we'll tell you if we'd replace it ourselves.

Pricing factors

The diagnostic visit is $89, waived when you go ahead with the repair, and the quote is given on the spot. What moves the repair price:

  • Manual-defrost chest freezer versus frost-free upright (more parts, more labour to reach them)
  • Whether the freezer needs to be thawed before the coil can be inspected
  • Access: garage, basement stairs or a built-in cabinet
  • Model-specific electronic controls that must be ordered
  • Sealed-system work by a certified technician is the most expensive category and is quoted separately
  • Second appliance on the same visit: If a second appliance is diagnosed on the same visit, it is $45 instead of the full $89.

Freezer questions

My freezer is cold but nothing freezes solid. What does that usually mean?

Cold-but-not-frozen often points to airflow or defrost problems on an upright, or a weak compressor or low refrigerant charge on a chest freezer. It is not something to diagnose from the kitchen; the technician measures the actual temperature and checks the coil before saying which.

Can I keep a freezer in an unheated garage in Ottawa?

Many freezers are rated only down to roughly 13 °C (55 °F) ambient, and manufacturers such as Frigidaire say not to install below that. Some models are sold as garage-ready. Check the manual for your model; if the garage is the problem, no repair will fix it.

How long will food stay frozen if the freezer stops?

A full, closed freezer holds temperature far longer than a half-empty one. Keep the lid or door shut and don't open it to check. If the food has thawed and warmed, follow Health Canada's guidance on discarding it rather than refreezing.

Is it worth fixing a 15-year-old chest freezer?

For a thermostat, relay or seal, often yes. For a compressor or refrigerant leak, usually no, and we'll say that in the finding rather than sell the repair.

Do you recharge freezers with refrigerant?

Refrigerant handling is done only by certified technicians and only after a leak is found and repaired; topping up a leaking system is not a fix.

Do you repair commercial chest freezers in shops and restaurants?

Yes, RepairWell services residential and commercial appliances in Ottawa and Gatineau. See the commercial appliance repair page for how those visits work.
