Chest freezer not cold enough

Short answer

A chest freezer that isn't cold enough usually has one of four problems: the control is set too warm, the lid isn't sealing, frost has built up, or the room is outside what the freezer is designed for.

Urgent A chest freezer often holds a lot of food, and Frigidaire recommends keeping it at −18 °C (0 °F); keep the lid shut while you check.

Quick answer

What this symptom usually means

A chest freezer that isn't cold enough usually has one of four problems: the control is set too warm, the lid isn't sealing, frost has built up, or the room is outside what the freezer is designed for. Most chest freezers are manual defrost, so frost is a normal part of owning one, but GE says it should be cleared once it reaches 6 to 13 mm (¼ to ½ in) thick. Past that point frost insulates the walls, and Frigidaire notes it can also stop the lid closing properly. Whirlpool says a lid can fail to seal if the freezer isn't level, if baskets are out of position, or if a package or leftover packing material is in the way. Room temperature matters more than people expect. Whirlpool's chest freezer page gives an installation range of 4 to 43 °C (40 to 110 °F), and an unheated Ottawa or Gatineau garage in January is far colder than that.

If the setting, seal, frost and location are all fine and the freezer still won't get down to temperature, GE lists the possibilities: a failed temperature control, a fault in the compressor's start relay or overload, open internal wiring, or a compressor that isn't running. A sealed-system leak is also possible. None of those can be confirmed without testing, and they are technician work.

Stop and call if: Food has started to thaw and the freezer isn't recovering (move it to another freezer or coolers); The compressor clicks every few minutes but never runs; A burning smell, or a hot cord or outlet.

Checks you can do yourself

  1. Check the dialWhirlpool says to turn the control to a higher number for colder, and that 2 to 4 is normal for keeping food near −18 °C (0 °F). Frigidaire recommends −18 °C and an operating range of about −21 to −14 °C (−6 to 6 °F). Make sure the dial wasn't turned to off while the freezer was being cleaned or loaded.
  2. Test the lid sealClose the lid on a paper bill: Frigidaire says you should feel some resistance as you pull it out. Try it at several points. Clean the gasket with warm soapy water. Whirlpool says to level the freezer side to side and front to back, seat the baskets properly, and remove any packing material.
  3. Measure the frostIf the frost is 6 to 13 mm (¼ to ½ in) thick, GE says it's time to defrost. Maytag says to do it at least once a year, or more often in humid conditions.
  4. Defrost safelyUnplug the freezer, move the food to coolers, and leave the lid open. GE suggests pans of hot water to speed it up and says not to use a garden hose. Maytag says never to use sharp tools on the walls. Use the drain plug if your model has one, dry the inside, plug it back in, and wait until it reaches −18 °C before reloading.
  5. Check the room and clearanceCompare the room temperature with the range in your manual. Whirlpool asks for at least 7.5 cm (3 in) of air space at the top and on both sides and keeping the freezer away from heat sources.
  6. Check the powerFrigidaire says to make sure the freezer is plugged into a properly grounded outlet and to check for a tripped GFCI. Garage and basement outlets are often GFCI outlets, and a tripped one looks like a dead freezer.
  7. Load it graduallyWhirlpool says to wait 6 to 8 hours after start-up before adding frozen food, to let it freeze overnight before adding a lot of unfrozen food, and to add no more than about 1 to 1.5 kg of unfrozen food per 28 litres of space (2 to 3 lb per cubic foot) at a time.

Nothing above involves gas, wiring, refrigerant or removing panels.

Most likely causes

What you notice, and what it can point to

Listed in no particular order. They help you describe the problem; only an inspection confirms the fault.

You notice

Freezer in an unheated garage stopped freezing in winter

Could point to: Room below the model's rated range

Next step: Move it indoors or check the manual for garage use

You notice

Thick frost on the walls, lid hard to close

Could point to: Frost overdue for defrosting

Next step: Defrost when frost reaches 6 to 13 mm, as GE advises

You notice

Frost around the lid opening only

Could point to: Lid not sealing: not level, baskets out of place, or gasket worn

Next step: Level the freezer, reseat the baskets, test with a paper bill

You notice

Freezer completely silent, no light

Could point to: Tripped GFCI, breaker or unplugged cord

Next step: Reset the GFCI and check the breaker

You notice

Clicks every few minutes, never runs, getting warmer

Could point to: Compressor not starting (relay, overload or compressor)

Next step: Protect the food and book a technician

You notice

Runs constantly, sides warm, food soft

Could point to: Sealed-system or control fault, or an overloaded freezer

Next step: Check the load and lid; book if it doesn't improve in a day

How it differs by design

  • Manual-defrost chest freezers have no defrost heater or fan. Frost builds on the walls over time and has to be melted off by hand, as GE and Maytag describe.
  • Frost-free uprights have a defrost system. GE lists a broken defrost control as a possible cause on frost-free models only, so the list of suspects is different for an upright.
  • Garage and cold-room use: installation ranges vary by model. Whirlpool gives 4 to 43 °C for its chest freezers, and Frigidaire says it doesn't recommend installing its units where the room drops below 13 °C (55 °F). Some models are sold as garage-ready and rated for colder rooms; the manual is the reference.
  • Warm cabinet sides: Whirlpool notes the outside of a freezer can feel warm, and that this is normal. On many chest freezers that heat is being shed through the cabinet walls.

What our technician checks

These need panels off, live electrical tests or a licensed trade, so they are left to the technician:

  • Removing the compressor cover or electrical box
  • Testing the relay, overload, control or compressor
  • Any work on refrigerant or the cooling tubing in the cabinet walls

Common parts involved

Repairs a technician may recommend

After inspection, not from the symptom alone.

Repair

Temperature control (thermostat) replacement

When the dial is turned to its coldest and the compressor still won't run, or runs without stopping at the wrong temperature. GE lists a broken control as one possibility.

Repair

Start relay or overload replacement

When the compressor clicks and won't stay running. GE lists a relay or overload fault; the technician tests them and the compressor before quoting.

Repair

Lid gasket or hinge replacement

When the gasket is torn or flattened, or a hinge lets the lid sit crooked, so the seal fails even with the freezer level and the baskets seated.

Repair

Wiring repair

When a connection inside the cabinet or at the compressor has opened, which GE lists among the causes of a freezer with power but no cooling.

Repair

Sealed-system diagnosis

When the compressor runs but the cabinet never gets cold. RepairWell diagnoses it; refrigerant work is done by a certified refrigeration technician we work with. On chest freezers the cooling tubing is often inside the cabinet walls, which the written finding takes into account.

Brand-specific

Brands we see with this problem

Codes, parts and access differ by brand; the brand pages cover where the model label is and what to expect.

Repair or replace

Cost, and whether to fix it

What the repair costs depends on the part, the labour and whether a second visit is needed for an ordered part; the written finding gives the total before any work. Our guides on what drives repair costs, freezer repair costs and repair versus replacement explain how to weigh it.

When to book

Book if the freezer is above −18 °C a day after you've checked the dial, confirmed the lid seals, defrosted if needed and made sure the room suits the model. Tell us the model (it's on a label, often on the back or side, or inside the lid; see finding the model number), where the freezer sits, and whether you hear the compressor run. The visit is $89 with a written finding, waived if you go ahead with the repair. For a small or older chest freezer, the finding includes our repair-or-replace verdict. Freezer repair explains what the diagnosis covers.

Questions

Chest freezer not cold enough: questions

What temperature should a chest freezer be?

Frigidaire recommends −18 °C (0 °F). Whirlpool says a setting of 2 to 4 on its dial keeps food near that, and Frigidaire gives about −21 to −14 °C (−6 to 6 °F) as the operating range. Check with a freezer thermometer rather than the dial.

Can a chest freezer be kept in the garage in winter?

Only if the model is rated for it. Whirlpool gives 4 to 43 °C (40 to 110 °F) for its chest freezers, and a garage in an Ottawa winter can be far colder. Some models are sold as garage-ready; check your manual.

How often should I defrost a chest freezer?

GE says when the frost is 6 to 13 mm (¼ to ½ in) thick, and Maytag says at least once a year, more often in humid conditions. Unplug it, move the food to coolers, and don't use sharp tools on the walls.

Why are the sides of my chest freezer warm?

Whirlpool says the outside of a freezer may feel warm and that this is normal. The heat removed from inside is released through the cabinet.

How long does a chest freezer take to get cold?

Whirlpool says to wait 6 to 8 hours before adding frozen food and to let it run overnight before adding a lot of unfrozen food. Frigidaire says to allow 24 hours for the temperature to stabilize.
