Chelsea and Cantley are rural residential municipalities, not city sectors, and that changes the appliance visit in practical ways. Chelsea (about 8,000 residents in 2021, roughly 10 km north of Ottawa) sits inside and beside Gatineau Park and is almost evenly bilingual: 46 per cent French and 43 per cent English as a first language. Cantley (11,449 in 2021, about 17 km from Parliament Hill) has roughly tripled in population since incorporation in 1989, with large lots on bedrock along Route 307. Houses here are mostly detached, many custom-built or self-built between the 1970s and today, with attached garages, secondary freezers, basement or main-floor laundry and, on the rural roads, long driveways.

Water is the big difference from Gatineau. Chelsea's municipal water and sewer serve only the centre-village (treated at the chemin Hudson plant) and part of Farm Point; the rest of the municipality is on private wells and septic, and the Municipality advises testing once or twice a year and notes that iron, uranium and other parameters affect water use. Cantley has no municipal aqueduct at all: the Municipality states that the vast majority of homes are on artesian wells drilled into bedrock, and that water quality is the owner's responsibility. Well water varies house by house. Hardness and iron are common, and they show up in appliances as scale on dishwasher elements, sticking inlet valves, orange staining in washers and clogged refrigerator water filters. When we diagnose here, we say plainly if the water is the likely cause, so you can decide about treatment before replacing the same part again.

Quebec's Consumer Protection Act applies on this side of the river. For a stove, refrigerator, freezer, dishwasher, washer or dryer, a repairer must give you a written estimate before any repair expected to cost more than $50, and can charge for that estimate only if the price was stated before the work started.
