Stove and range repair
A range is two appliances in one cabinet, and the top half fails differently from the bottom. On the cooktop side it is burners that won't light or elements that won't heat; on the oven side it is elements, igniters and sensors. RepairWell repairs both, in the same visit where possible, and separates the two in the written finding so you can see what each costs.
We repair freestanding and slide-in ranges, electric coil and smooth-top, gas and dual-fuel, in Ottawa and Gatineau homes and rental units. Gas is common in newer Ottawa suburbs and in older Gatineau homes with propane; all gas-side work on a range is done by certified technicians, and the only gas-related checks we suggest at home are cleaning and seating the burner caps.

Types and configurations we service
- Electric coil ranges — Plug-in surface elements, receptacles and infinite switches; the simplest range to repair.
- Electric smooth-top (radiant) ranges — Radiant elements under glass, limiter switches and touch controls; a cracked top is the expensive fault.
- Gas ranges — Sealed burners with spark igniters, a spark module, and an oven with a hot-surface igniter; gas-side work by certified technicians only.
- Dual-fuel ranges — Gas cooktop with an electric oven; two systems to check, and both may be on the same visit.
- Slide-in and professional-style ranges — Heavier, tighter fit and more expensive parts; access to the back takes longer.

Possible causes
These are possibilities, not a diagnosis; the technician confirms the cause on site.
- A burner cap sitting off-centre or ports clogged with boil-over, which Frigidaire lists as the first things to check when a gas burner won't light
- A spark igniter electrode that is wet, cracked or coated, or a spark module that has failed
- A gas oven igniter that glows but has weakened below the current needed to open the safety valve (certified technician)
- A surface element, its receptacle or the infinite switch behind the knob on a coil range
- A radiant element or the limiter switch under the glass on a smooth-top
- A failed oven temperature sensor or bake element
- A relay board or electronic control that no longer switches power to the elements or igniters
- One leg of the 240 V supply missing, so the clock works and the elements don't; or, on a gas range, no power to the 120 V outlet behind it
Repairs a technician may recommend
- Replace the spark igniter, spark module or burner head on a gas cooktop (certified technician)
- Replace the oven igniter and inspect the oven burner and safety valve (certified technician)
- Replace a surface element, element receptacle or infinite switch
- Replace a radiant element or limiter on a smooth-top, or the glass top itself where it is cracked
- Replace the bake or broil element, oven sensor or door gasket
- Replace the electronic oven control, relay board, knobs or touch panel
- Replace the terminal block or power cord where heat damage is found
- Replace the anti-tip bracket and level the range where it was never fitted
Typical components involved: surface burners, caps and spark igniters (gas), spark module and gas valves (technician-only), coil or radiant elements and infinite switches, glass cooktop and limiter switches, oven elements or oven igniter and burner, oven temperature sensor and control board, door, gasket and hinges, terminal block, power cord and anti-tip bracket.
Safe checks before you book
- On a gas burner that won't light, lift the cap and burner head when cold, wash them, dry thoroughly and reseat the cap level; moisture from cleaning often causes clicking
- Check that the knob is turned to the lite position and held until the burner catches, as Frigidaire's guide describes
- On a coil range, press the safety switch in the centre of the element and make sure it springs back; swap two same-size coils to see whether the fault moves with the element
- Check the display for control lock, delay start or Sabbath mode
- Reset the double breaker fully off and on; on a gas range, test the outlet behind it with a lamp (the igniters need 120 V)
- Unplug or switch off at the breaker for 30 seconds to reset the electronic control
Stop using it if
- Any smell of gas: turn the burners off, don't operate switches, open windows and call the gas utility from outside
- A burner that lights with a delayed pop or a large yellow flame, which can mean a gas-air problem
- An element that glows with the knob off, or a coil that sparks at the receptacle
- A cracked glass cooktop with liquid getting under it: stop using that zone
- Smoke or scorching behind the control panel
Never work on gas lines, wiring, refrigerant or microwave components yourself.
What to expect during diagnosis and repair
The technician checks the cooktop and oven separately. On a gas range a certified technician watches each burner light, checks the flame shape, and tests the spark module and igniters; the oven igniter is timed and measured. On an electric range the elements, switches and receptacles are metered, and the oven is run through a temperature cycle. Nothing on the gas side is opened by anyone else. You get a written finding listing cooktop and oven items separately with a combined total, before any repair starts. Igniters, elements, switches and sensors are frequently on the truck; glass tops, control boards and burner assemblies for professional-style ranges are ordered.
Repair or replace?
Because a range is two systems, the decision depends on how many things are wrong. A single igniter, element, switch or sensor is a straightforward repair on almost any range. A cracked glass top, an expensive control board, or oven and cooktop faults together on a builder-grade electric range can add up to a large share of a new one, and the finding will show that side by side. Gas and dual-fuel ranges, slide-ins and professional-style ranges lean toward repair because they cost more to replace and their parts are generally serviceable for longer.

Pricing factors
The diagnostic visit is $89, waived when you go ahead with the repair, and the quote is given on the spot. What moves the repair price:
- Cooktop-only, oven-only or both in one visit
- Gas-side components replaced by a certified technician
- Glass cooktop replacement is a large part cost
- Slide-in and professional-style ranges take longer to move and open
- Control boards and burner assemblies ordered by model
- Second appliance on the same visit: If a second appliance is diagnosed on the same visit, it is $45 instead of the full $89.

Stove & range questions
One burner keeps clicking and won't light. Is that dangerous?
Continuous clicking is usually a wet or dirty igniter, a misplaced cap, or a spark module fault. It isn't normally dangerous if the burner isn't leaking gas, but if you smell gas, turn everything off and follow the gas-smell steps above. Cleaning the burner and cap is the one safe check to try.
Do you send a certified technician for gas ranges?
Not our own technicians, no. All work on burners, igniters, valves and gas connections is done by a certified gas contractor we work with. We diagnose the appliance and the certificate holder does the gas work.
Can you convert my range from natural gas to propane?

The oven works but the smooth-top elements don't. Same problem?
Usually not. On an electric range the cooktop elements have their own switches and, on many models, a separate limiter under the glass. The technician checks the cooktop circuit on its own.
Do you install ranges?
Gas connections must be made by a licensed gas fitter; see range, cooktop and wall-oven installation.
Why is the flame yellow instead of blue?
A yellow, lifting or sooty flame can mean a blocked port, a cap off-centre, or an air-gas mixture problem. Clean and reseat the cap; if the flame is still yellow, book a certified technician and don't try to adjust anything on the burner.
Is a 20-year-old coil range worth fixing?
Very often yes. Elements, switches and receptacles are inexpensive and these ranges are simple. If the oven control fails and the part is no longer made, that changes the answer, and we'll say so.
