Samsung washer repair and error codes

RepairWell repairs Samsung front-load, top-load and FlexWash washers in Ottawa and Gatineau. We are an independent service, not authorized by Samsung, so repairs that must be done under Samsung's warranty go through Samsung Canada. For everything else, the diagnostic is $89, waived when you go ahead with the repair, and the finding and quote are in writing before work starts.

Samsung Canada states a 12-month parts and labour warranty on its washers, with a 10-year parts warranty on the Digital Inverter motor. Samsung front-loaders have a pump (debris) filter behind a small panel at the bottom front, with an emergency drain hose beside it; top-loaders do not. Samsung also uses several different codes for the same fault across its model lines, and a few codes mean different things on different models, which is why the model number matters as much as the code.

RepairWell is an independent repair service and is not affiliated with or authorized by Samsung.

Samsung washing machine error codes

The codes below come from Samsung's washing machine error code guide on its U.S. support site, which groups the codes used across Samsung front-load, top-load and FlexWash models. We found no equivalent Canadian code list; the Canadian care and drainage guides cited below are written for washers sold in Canada. Samsung itself notes that dC is a door error on some models and an unbalanced-load error on others, and that 3E can be a voltage or a motor error. Check the owner's manual for your model number before acting on a code.

Some displays are information, not faults: Ur means the washer is retrying to balance the load, Cb or C6 is calibration mode, dn means a software download, and CL relates to Child Lock.

CodeWhat Samsung says it meansChecks Samsung lists for ownersWhen to bookSource
4C, 4E, nF, 1 4CNot filling: water is not entering the washer correctly.
  • Check that hot and cold hoses go to the matching inlets and are not bent or kinked. Samsung notes a disconnected hot line can cause this error even on cycles labelled Cold.
  • Open both water valves fully and leave them open while the washer runs.
  • Check the drain hose is inserted 6 to 8 in (15 to 20 cm) into the drain pipe and not kinked.
  • Unplug the washer or switch off its breaker for 1 minute, then try a cycle.
  • Samsung also describes turning the water off, disconnecting the hoses and cleaning the inlet filters. Samsung advises against Flood Safe hoses.
Book if the valves are open, the hoses are correct and 4C still appears.Samsung US Support
4C2, 4E2, CE, nF1Hot/cold error: the water from the cold supply is extremely hot, which Samsung says happens when the supply hoses are swapped.
  • With the water valves closed, reconnect cold to the cold inlet and hot to the hot inlet (if the hoses are colour-coded, blue to blue and red to red). Samsung says this code does not mean service is needed.
Book only if the hoses are on the right inlets and the code continues.Samsung US Support
5C, 5E, SC, SE, nd, 1 5CNo drain: water is not draining at the correct speed or at all.
  • Samsung Canada's drainage guide: turn the washer off and check it is level.
  • Check the drain hose goes 6 to 8 in (15 to 20 cm) into the standpipe, and sits at least 18 in (46 cm) high but no higher than 96 in (244 cm); for a laundry sink, 24 in (61 cm) minimum and 35 in (89 cm) maximum.
  • Front-loaders: clean the pump filter. If a hot cycle just ran, let the water cool for about an hour first.
  • Restart a cycle and watch whether it begins to drain.
Book if the washer does not drain at the start of a test cycle after these checks.Samsung Canada Support
OE, OC, 0E, 0COverflow: there is too much water in the washer.
  • Samsung points to its drainage guide for this code; the same hose, level and filter checks apply.
Book promptly if the washer keeps filling or water reaches the door, and close the water valves until the visit.Samsung US Support
LC, LE, 1E, 1C, LC1Water level or leakage: moisture is detected where it does not belong, or the sensor has a problem.
  • Look for a leak, including small ones, and check the supply and drain hoses are not kinked.
  • Do not remove the screw that holds the drain hose to the back of the washer; Samsung says a missing holder needs service.
  • Run an empty cycle with no detergent or softener. If suds appear, too much or non-HE detergent was used; repeat until there are no suds.
Book if there are no suds and the code continues, or if you find water inside or under the washer.Samsung US Support
dC, dE, dL, dS, FL, LO, dE1, dE2, dC1Door error: the door is not detected as closed and locked. (On some models dC is an unbalanced-load error instead; see your manual.)
  • Check the latch is secure, nothing is caught in the door, and the door is closed properly.
  • If Child Lock is on and water is in the tub, Samsung says this code can appear even with no cycle running; closing the door or turning Child Lock off lets the washer drain.
  • FlexWash: a 1dC4 code can mean the rubber button beside the upper washer's latch is missing, which Samsung says does not need service.
Book if the door or latch is damaged or the code cannot be cleared.Samsung US Support
Ub, UE, U6, 1 Ub (and dc on some models)Unbalanced load: the washer cannot complete the cycle because the load is unbalanced. Ur on its own only means it is retrying.
  • Untangle and rearrange the laundry, close the door and press Start.
Book if the code appears on normal, balanced loads; Samsung's next step is its washer-won't-spin guide.Samsung US Support
SUd, 5Ud, Sd, 5dExcessive suds: the washer pauses to let suds dissipate, then continues. Samsung says it is caused by incorrect detergent use and does not mean service is needed.
  • Use the correct HE detergent in the recommended amount.
Book only if leaks or other codes continue after the detergent is corrected.Samsung US Support
PF, 9C1, 9C2, 9E1, 9E2, UCVoltage error: irregular power supply. PF also appears after a power outage, unplugging or a tripped breaker during a cycle.
  • Make sure the washer is on its own circuit and not on an extension cord.
Book if the code continues with a normal, dedicated circuit.Samsung US Support
E2, bE2, 6E2Jammed button: a panel button is detected as stuck or continuously pressed.
  • Power the washer off and press every button individually, working each back and forth to reach all edges before releasing.

SDC, 5DCDetergent drawer error: the drawer is not completely closed. Samsung says it clicks when fully closed.
  • Push the detergent drawer in until it clicks.

3E, 3C, E3, bE, 6EMotor error (3E can be a voltage error on some models), or bE/6E motor speed sensor error.
  • Samsung's basic steps: power off for 2 to 3 minutes, power on and restart the cycle.
Book if the code returns; Samsung lists no user fix beyond the power reset.Samsung US Support
HE, HC, HE1, tE, tCHE and HC are heater errors; tE and tC are temperature sensor errors.

Finding the model and serial number

Samsung Canada says the model and serial numbers are usually around the front door: open the door and check the frame or the area near the door seal. If they are not there, they are on a label at the back. On top-load models Samsung usually puts the label at the back of the washer. On a Laundry Hub, the master serial number is on the front under either door, and the washer and dryer each have their own serial number, shown by scanning the QR code on the front. Samsung suggests photographing the label if it is hard to reach.

What's specific to Samsung washing machines

  • Pump filter and emergency drain hose (front-loaders only). Samsung Canada says front-load washers have a debris filter behind an access panel near the bottom, next to a small rubber drain hose used to empty the remaining water. Samsung recommends cleaning it at least once a month or about every 40 washes, and letting the water cool after a hot cycle. It also says to check the drain pump impeller inside the filter housing is clean.
  • Drain hose rules. Samsung Canada calls incorrect drain hose installation the most common cause of drainage issues. The hose goes 6 to 8 in into the standpipe, between 18 and 96 in high, and the screw and holder on the back must stay in place.
  • Self Clean or Pure Cycle. Samsung Canada recommends the built-in tub cleaning cycle (Self Clean or Pure Cycle, depending on the model), wiping the door gasket and cleaning the detergent drawer to prevent odours and buildup.
  • Digital Inverter motor warranty. Samsung Canada states a 10-year parts warranty on the Digital Inverter motor, and that certain direct-drive models have additional parts coverage. Motor claims go through Samsung.
  • Calibration. Samsung says Calibration mode (Cb or C6) resets the washer's weight detection and must be run with the drum empty; a washer calibrated with laundry in it may not measure water correctly.
  • SmartThings. Samsung Canada says the SmartThings app offers remote diagnostics for Samsung appliances. A code or alert from the app is useful to pass on when you book.

Recalls and notices

Health Canada posted a recall of certain Samsung top-load washing machines on October 4, 2016 (RA-60482) and an updated and expanded recall on November 4, 2016 (RA-60872). Both notices are now archived. They cover listed Samsung top-load models, and some Kenmore models made by Samsung, manufactured between March 2011 and April 2016 (some models to June or October 2016); about 256,000 units were sold in Canada. The hazard stated is that washing bedding, bulky or water-resistant items at certain settings may cause abnormal vibration and the top may detach during spin. The remedy offered was a free in-home repair with an update kit and a one-year warranty extension, or a prorated rebate towards a new Samsung washer.

If you have an older Samsung top-loader, compare the model number on the label at the back with the list in the notice and contact Samsung Canada if it matches. The recall does not cover Samsung front-load washers or top-load models not on the list. We found no other Health Canada recall of Samsung washers when this page was reviewed in September 2026. A recall is not the same as a service bulletin or a customer complaint.

When to book

Book when a code returns after the checks Samsung lists, when Samsung's basic steps (power off for 2 to 3 minutes, then restart) do not clear a motor, heater, sensor or communication code, or straight away if the washer is leaking or overfilling. Tell us the code exactly as shown, whether it is front-load, top-load or FlexWash, and the model number, since several Samsung codes change meaning by model. The diagnostic is $89, waived if you go ahead with the repair. If the washer is inside Samsung's 12-month warranty, or the fault is the Digital Inverter motor inside its 10-year parts coverage, contact Samsung Canada first.

Samsung washing machine questions

My Samsung washer shows 5C. What should I check first?

Samsung Canada's drainage guide starts with the washer being level and the drain hose: 6 to 8 in into the standpipe, 18 to 96 in high, not kinked. On a front-loader, clean the pump filter next, after letting any hot water cool. If it still will not drain, book a visit.

Why does my Samsung washer show dC when the door is shut?

On some Samsung models dC is a door error; on others it means an unbalanced load. Check your manual. If it is the door code, check the latch and that nothing is caught; if it is the balance code, rearrange the load and restart.

My washer shows 4C2 or CE. Is it broken?

Samsung says these mean the cold supply is delivering very hot water, which happens when the hot and cold hoses are swapped. Reconnecting them correctly clears it; Samsung says it does not need service.

Does the Samsung pump filter need cleaning?

On front-loaders, yes. Samsung Canada recommends at least monthly or about every 40 washes. Top-loaders do not have one.

Is my Samsung top-loader part of the 2016 recall?

Only if its model number is on Health Canada's list and it was made in the stated date range. The label is on the back. If it matches, contact Samsung Canada; the recall remedy comes from Samsung.

Are you authorized by Samsung?

No. RepairWell is independent. We repair out-of-warranty Samsung washers and give second opinions; warranty repairs should go through Samsung Canada.
