Who makes Smeg. Smeg was founded in 1948 by Vittorio Bertazzoni in Guastalla, Italy, and is still family-owned. The name stands for Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla, from its start as an enamelling works. Smeg launched its 1950s-styled refrigerators in 1997. In Canada, the brand is run by Smeg Canada Inc., which announced a new general manager for its Canadian operations from Mississauga, Ontario, in January 2026. Smeg Canada lists its design lines as 50's Style, Victoria, Linea, Classica, Portofino and Professional.

Retro refrigerators: what changes the repair. Smeg Canada lists the FAB28, for example FAB28URPB3 in pastel blue, as a one-door refrigerator with an internal freezer compartment. The spec sheet says defrost is automatic for the refrigerator, manual for the freezer. Frost building up in that small freezer is expected, and you defrost it by hand; it is not a failed defrost system. The same model has an inverter compressor, R600a refrigerant, electronic temperature control, a door-open alarm and climate class SN-T (rated for rooms from 10 to 43 °C, 50 to 109 °F). Larger 50's Style, Portofino and Universale models are listed as Total No Frost with a double cooling system, and some have an automatic ice maker; on those, frost build-up is a fault worth diagnosing. The R600a circuit is sealed: We diagnose the sealed system; the refrigerant work itself is done for us by a certified refrigeration technician.

Ranges: what changes the repair. Smeg Canada sells ranges from 24 to 48 inches (61 to 122 cm) wide in gas, dual-fuel and induction versions. The configuration decides who does the work:

• All-gas. The Portofino CPF30UGGX has a gas hob and a gas oven with a gas grill.
• Dual-fuel. The Portofino CPF30UGMX and the Professional SPR30UGMX pair a gas hob with an electric true-convection oven. Oven elements, fans, sensors and controls on a dual-fuel range are electrical repairs we do ourselves.
• Flame-failure protection. Smeg says its gas hobs have a thermocouple that cuts the gas supply if the flame goes out, plus automatic electronic ignition and gas safety valves.
• Cooling fan. Smeg describes a cooling system with a tangential fan that moves air from the oven door to the splashback. A noisy or stopped cooling fan is a repair in its own right.

We diagnose gas appliances. Burner, igniter, valve and gas-connection work is done by a certified gas contractor we work with, not by our own technicians. If you smell gas, leave and call your gas utility from outside; see our gas smell guide.

Dishwashers. Smeg Canada lists 24-inch (60 cm) under-counter and fully integrated dishwashers with 8 to 16 place settings. That includes 50's Style under-counter models in black, cream, red and white, whose coloured fronts are specific parts.

For Gatineau owners. On its Quebec page, Smeg Canada Inc. refers to the legal guarantee of availability under the Quebec Consumer Protection Act. It says it guarantees spare parts for ten years from the original purchase date, subject to availability from SMEG S.p.A. and its approved supply chain. It also says it maintains authorized service providers across Canada but cannot guarantee them in every region.

Recalls. We searched the Government of Canada's recall database (open dataset, updated 24 September 2026) for Smeg and found no Smeg major-appliance recall listed.

Finding your Smeg model and serial number

Every Smeg label shows the product code and the serial number. Smeg's support page gives the label location by product family:

• Refrigerators and freezers: inside the appliance, on the left side.
• Ovens and ranges (cookers): around the door cavity, on the left side. Open the oven door to see it.
• Dishwashers: on the inside corner of the door.
• Cooktops (hobs): on the underside of the appliance. Once a cooktop is installed, use your invoice or manual instead.
• Range hoods: on the underside, behind the filter.
• Wine coolers: inside, on the left. Warming drawers: inside the drawer, on the left side.

Send us the whole product code, not just the family name. Smeg Canada lists the same retro fridge in left- and right-hinged versions and in many colours, each with its own code. Parts and compatibility

Smeg parts come through Smeg Canada from SMEG S.p.A. in Italy and are matched by product code. Colour-matched parts are the ones to plan around: doors, handles, trims and hinges on 50's Style fridges and dishwashers, and knobs, handles and panels on Portofino and Victoria ranges. Functional parts are more straightforward: thermostats and electronic controls, fans, oven elements, igniters and thermocouples, pumps. When a model is retiring, as Smeg Canada marks the CPF30UGGX range, parts can take longer to find over time. For Quebec buyers, Smeg Canada states a ten-year parts-availability commitment from the purchase date, subject to supply from Italy.
