Where Moffat comes from. The Moffat Stove Company was founded in 1892 in Weston, now part of Toronto. General Steel Wares bought it in 1971. In 1977 GSW merged its appliance business with General Electric Canada to form Camco, the Canadian Appliance Manufacturing Company. Library and Archives Canada's history of Camco lists General Electric, Hotpoint, Moffat, McClary and Beaumont among the brands it built, with Ontario plants including Hamilton and a plant in Montreal. Mabe Canada Inc. is Camco's successor. GE Appliances calls it "Mabe Canada Inc. (formerly CAMCO)" and names it as its authorized Canadian distributor.

Moffat today. GE Appliances Canada sells a current Moffat line. Examples on its site include the MCB757DMWW 30-inch electric range (lift-up coil cooktop, two 1,500 W and two 2,600 W elements, 5.0 cu. ft. self-cleaning oven, electronic oven control), the MTW201BMRWW 4.4 cu. ft. top-load washer (Wave agitator, stainless steel basket, 800 RPM spin, four water levels plus Precise Fill), the MTX22EBMRWW electric dryer, the MBT425SGVWW dishwasher (top controls, hard food disposer with a stainless blade, CleanSensor, condensation drying, 51 dBA) and the MWE22FYPKFS counter-depth French-door fridge with a factory-installed ice maker. The models we list carry a one-year limited parts and labour warranty.

What makes Moffat different to repair.

• Canadian model numbers. Moffat models only exist in Canada, so U.S. parts sites often do not list them, even when the parts are the same as on a GE-built equivalent. We look them up through Canadian parts channels.
• Lift-up coil tops. On ranges like the MCB757DMWW, the cooktop lifts so you can clean underneath, and the drip bowls come out. A coil element that will not heat can be the element, its receptacle or the infinite switch. Lifting the top to clean is fine. Testing the wiring underneath is technician work.
• Manual-defrost chest freezers. Moffat's chest-freezer manual says chest models have a defrost-water drain at the front or on the left side, and that you should put a shallow pan under the outlet when you defrost. Frost build-up on a manual-defrost freezer is expected, not a fault. The manual says not to let more than 13 mm (1/2 in.) build up on the shelves. A freezer that is not cold with little ice may point to a thermostat, a start relay or a sealed-system problem. We diagnose sealed-system faults; the refrigerant work itself is done for us by a certified refrigeration technician.
• Dishwasher disposer and sensor. A dishwasher with a hard food disposer and CleanSensor adds a chopper blade and a sensor. A grinding sound, poor draining or wash cycles that change length can come from either part.

Recalls. Health Canada posted a recall on 8 December 2021 of GE, Moffat, GE Profile, Insignia and Haier 24- and 30-inch free-standing and slide-in gas and electric ranges sold from May to July 2021, about 12,960 units in Canada. The ranges could tip over if a heavy weight was placed on the open oven door, and owners were told to arrange a free inspection and repair. An earlier Health Canada recall on 9 August 2012 covered GE, GE Profile, Moffat and Beaumark plastic-tub dishwashers with front controls sold from March 2006 to August 2009, about 90,400 units, because of a fire risk from an electrical failure in the heating element. Check both against your model number. GE Appliances Canada's recall page lists the range recall.

Finding your Moffat model and serial number

Moffat's chest-freezer manual (models MCM5FX to MCM15FX) says the model and serial numbers are "on a plate on the top-center on the back of the unit." For other Moffat appliances we did not find a Moffat-specific label chart. Moffat appliances come from the same company as GE-branded models, so start where GE Appliances' locator says to look:

• Ranges: behind the door on the front frame; under the left front surface unit on coil models; under a lift-up cooktop, centred or on the right; on the left leg behind the drawer; or inside the drawer on the front frame.
• Top-freezer fridges: inside the fresh-food section on the left wall near the top, on the freezer ceiling near the front, or behind the crisper drawers.
• Top-load washers: under the lid near the right hinge, on the back of the control panel, or on the back near the water inlets.
• Dryers: inside the door opening on the left or right side.
• Dishwashers: on the left or right front inside edge of the tub, or on the right side edge of the door.

Moffat model numbers usually start with M, such as MCB757DMWW or MTE18GSKSS. Send us a photo of the whole plate when you book. For a chest freezer, you may need to pull it away from the wall to see the plate.

Parts and compatibility

Moffat parts come through Mabe Canada, GE Appliances' Canadian distributor. Many Moffat components are the same as on equivalent GE-built models, but the Canadian model number is what confirms the match, so we never order by a lookalike. Common parts such as coil elements and receptacles, infinite switches, oven elements and sensors, washer drive parts and lid switches, dryer belts and thermal fuses, dishwasher pumps and fridge defrost parts are generally obtainable.

Older Camco-era Moffat appliances can be harder to find parts for, and some parts are discontinued. We tell you in the written finding if that is the case. On an older chest freezer or top-freezer fridge, a sealed-system repair can cost more than the appliance is worth, and the finding says so. Parts and labour we install carry our 90-day warranty.
