Who Midea is. Midea Group was founded in 1968 and describes itself as a publicly listed Fortune 500 company and the world's leading manufacturer of home appliances, with more than 190,000 employees. Its production bases include sites in China, the United States, Europe, South America and elsewhere in Asia. Midea Canada, the Canadian subsidiary, says it has operated from Markham, Ontario, since 2006. Besides Midea-branded appliances, Midea Canada says it markets Eureka vacuums, Comfee smart appliances, Pelonis comfort products and Toshiba lifestyle products.

Does Midea make other brands? You will read online that Midea builds appliances sold under other names. The only mention of that on Midea's own pages we checked is a footnote about production of residential inverter air conditioners, which counts "OEM brands". None of the official pages we read list which other appliance brands Midea manufactures for. So we do not guess who built your appliance. We identify it by the brand and model number on its own label and order parts that way.

What Midea Canada sells. Midea Canada's support page covers refrigeration (French-door, convertible, top- and bottom-mount, compact and wine coolers), upright and chest freezers, built-in, freestanding and countertop dishwashers, ranges, microwaves, range hoods, and laundry (washers, dryers and combos). A few points from Midea's own pages help with repair:

• Convertible fridges and freezers. Some units switch between fridge and freezer. Midea's FAQ notes that some freezers have a refrigerator conversion mode, so a "freezer not freezing" can simply be a unit left in fridge mode.
• Chest freezers defrost by hand. Midea says its chest freezers require manual defrost. Some have a drain at the bottom; others must be emptied of water by hand.
• 2-in-1 combos are ventless. Midea's combos wash and dry in one drum with no dryer duct. On combo units, Midea says the door stays locked after drying until the drum cools to 10 °C (50 °F).
• A stiff freezer door can be normal. Midea explains that after the door closes, the fan creates negative pressure inside, so the door can be hard to reopen for a few minutes. Forcing it can damage the handle and gasket.
• Ranges are electric. Midea Canada's range page describes freestanding electric ranges with multi-element cooktops, broil and steam-assisted cleaning.

Midea's U.S. support FAQ also lists freezer error codes, including E1 to E3 (sensor problem), E4 and E5 (defrost sensor), E6 and CA (communication failure between the main board and the display board), E9 (high-temperature alert) and Ed (door open more than 120 seconds). Codes can differ on Canadian models, so tell us the code and the model number together.

Finding your Midea model and serial number

Midea Canada's support pages do not show label locations, so these come from Midea's U.S. support FAQ. Canadian models may differ, so if the label is not where these say, check the owner's manual. Refrigerators and freezers: two stickers on the outside of the unit, one on the rear, one on the right side, or both, depending on the model. One sticker carries the model number and unit information; the other has a bar code and a 22-digit serial number. Washers: a sticker in the interior space of the unit, visible when the lid or door is open. Dishwasher (MDT24H3AST): on the left side of the door, with model and serial on one long tag.

On a chest freezer against a basement wall, the rear sticker may be hard to reach, so try the right side first. Photograph both stickers and text them with your booking. Our model and serial number guide has general tips.

Parts and compatibility

Midea parts are model-specific, and a Midea sold in Canada may not share every part with a similar-looking U.S. model. Midea Canada sells parts and accessories through its parts partner and publishes a document on the availability of spare parts, repair services and maintenance information, which is worth checking for your model. For warranty service, Midea Canada takes repair requests online and by phone at 1-888-365-2230, and its service locator lists its authorized providers.

Some common parts are straightforward; control boards and parts for newer models or combo units can take longer or be back-ordered.
