Refrigerator too cold or freezing food

Short answer

In frost-free fridges like those Whirlpool and LG describe, the cold air is made in the freezer and pushed into the fresh-food section through vents; Whirlpool and LG both describe it that way.

Soon Frozen produce and drinks are a waste problem rather than a food-safety one, but LG notes that blocked vents can also let the freezer warm up, so check both sections.

Quick answer

What this symptom usually means

In frost-free fridges like those Whirlpool and LG describe, the cold air is made in the freezer and pushed into the fresh-food section through vents; Whirlpool and LG both describe it that way. So a fresh-food section that freezes food can have one of three things going on: the settings are colder than they need to be, cold air is landing directly on food, or the fridge isn't sensing its own temperature properly. Whirlpool says a fridge set below about 2 °C (35 °F), or a freezer set far below −18 °C (0 °F), can push too much cold air into the fresh-food side, and that 1 °C (34 °F) or lower can freeze food there. A tall container against a vent, an overpacked shelf, or a lightly loaded fridge can all make cold spots. GE adds that a nearly empty fridge has too little food to absorb the cold air, and Whirlpool says an ice maker left on without a water supply can make the fresh-food section too cold.

If the settings are normal and the vents are clear but food still freezes, LG says the temperature sensor may be reading wrong or the evaporator may be working too hard, and that needs a technician. Room temperature matters too. Whirlpool notes that a very cold room, such as an unheated garage, changes how the fridge cycles, and Samsung gives a supported room range of 10 °C to 43 °C (50 °F to 110 °F).

Stop and call if: The freezer section is warming while the fridge section freezes food (see refrigerator not cooling); A burning or electrical smell, or a breaker that trips again; Water pooling under the fridge or reaching an outlet.

Checks you can do yourself

  1. Check the settingsWhirlpool and LG both give about 3 °C (37 °F) as the factory fridge setting, with the freezer at −18 °C (0 °F). If food is freezing, LG suggests raising the fridge to about 4 °C (39 to 40 °F). On some dial models a lower number is warmer, so check the manual before turning it. Wait 24 hours before judging the change.
  2. Turn off any boost modeSamsung says its Power Cool feature runs the fridge section at maximum cooling, which may be more than you need. If your fridge has a fast-cool option, make sure it isn't left on.
  3. Clear the ventsKeep food about 5 cm (2 in) from the vents, as Samsung advises, and don't overfill shelves. Move high-moisture food such as tofu, sprouts, lettuce and eggs to the front of the shelf, which LG recommends. If the vents on the back wall are covered in frost or ice, Samsung says it needs to be cleared.
  4. Check the sensor areaOn models with a visible sensor, such as the dome GE describes on the fresh-food ceiling, leave clear space around it so it reads the real air temperature.
  5. Ice maker without waterIf the fridge has an ice maker but no water line connected, turn the ice maker off as the manual shows. Whirlpool lists this as a cause of a too-cold fresh-food section and frozen crisper drawers.
  6. Room and levelMake sure the fridge isn't in a space colder than its manual allows, and that it sits level; Whirlpool includes levelling in its checks.

Nothing above involves gas, wiring, refrigerant or removing panels.

Most likely causes

What you notice, and what it can point to

Listed in no particular order. They help you describe the problem; only an inspection confirms the fault.

You notice

Only items at the back or next to a vent freeze

Could point to: Food sitting in the cold airflow from the freezer

Next step: Move delicate items forward and leave space around the vents

You notice

Crisper drawers freeze

Could point to: Fridge set colder than needed, or the bottom vents to the freezer blocked

Next step: Raise the setting one step, clear the bottom vents, wait 24 hours

You notice

Everything in the fridge runs cold, even with normal settings

Could point to: Sensor reading wrong, control fault, or boost mode left on

Next step: Turn off boost modes; if it continues, book a diagnosis

You notice

Fridge too cold and buzzing or clicking every so often

Could point to: Ice maker switched on with no water supply

Next step: Turn the ice maker off or connect the water line

You notice

Fridge freezing food and freezer getting warm

Could point to: Blocked vents or iced evaporator starving the freezer of air

Next step: Clear the vents; if the back wall is iced, book a technician

You notice

Freezing started when the weather turned cold

Could point to: Fridge in an unheated garage or porch below its rated room range

Next step: Move it indoors or check the manual's room-temperature range

How it differs by design

  • Top freezer: GE says the back of the top shelf is the coldest spot in the fresh-food section, and that cold air naturally falls, so produce and meat pans can freeze if the controls are set too cold.
  • Bottom freezer and French door: GE puts the fresh-food sensor on the ceiling above the top shelf (a dome with slats) and asks for about 15 cm (6 in) of clearance around it. Whirlpool warns not to put eggs or liquids directly in the airflow coming from the freezer. LG adds that crisper drawers freeze when the bottom vents leading to the freezer are blocked.
  • Side-by-side: GE says the damper (air vent) is on the left wall of the fresh-food side and is often its coldest spot. Door bins should sit one notch away from the freezer vents.
  • Vent positions vary by model, as Whirlpool points out, so the owner's manual is the reference for where not to store delicate food.
On the visit

What our technician checks

These need panels off, live electrical tests or a licensed trade, so they are left to the technician:

  • Removing the freezer or fresh-food back panels, or chipping ice off the evaporator
  • Testing sensors, dampers or the control board with meters
  • Anything involving refrigerant (done by a certified refrigeration technician)

Common parts involved

Repairs a technician may recommend

After inspection, not from the symptom alone.

Repair

Temperature sensor (thermistor) replacement

When the settings and vents are fine but the section still runs cold. LG names a sensor reading incorrectly as one possibility; the technician checks the reading against a thermometer before replacing anything.

Repair

Control board or user-interface diagnosis

When the display setting and the real temperature don't match, or changes to the setting have no effect.

Repair

Airflow damper inspection

On models that use a damper to let freezer air into the fresh-food side, the technician checks that it opens and closes when the control asks it to.

Repair

Defrost and evaporator inspection

When the vents or the back wall keep icing over, or LG's 'evaporator working too hard' possibility applies. See excessive frost buildup.

Repair

Water-line connection or ice-maker valve check

When an ice maker was left on without water. Connecting the supply may be all it needs; RepairWell also connects fridge water lines where the existing plumbing is in place.

Brand-specific

Brands we see with this problem

Codes, parts and access differ by brand; the brand pages cover where the model label is and what to expect.

Repair or replace

Cost, and whether to fix it

What the repair costs depends on the part, the labour and whether a second visit is needed for an ordered part; the written finding gives the total before any work. Our guides on what drives repair costs, refrigerator repair costs and repair versus replacement explain how to weigh it.

When to book

Book if food still freezes 24 hours after you've set the fridge to about 4 °C, cleared the vents and turned off any boost mode, or if the vents or back wall keep icing over. It helps to put a thermometer in a glass of water on the middle shelf overnight and tell us the reading, the setting, and the fridge style (top freezer, bottom freezer, French door or side-by-side). The visit is $89 with a written finding, waived if you go ahead with the repair. Refrigerator repair explains what the diagnosis covers.

Questions

Refrigerator too cold or freezing food: questions

What should my fridge be set to if it keeps freezing food?

Whirlpool gives 3 to 4 °C (37 to 40 °F) as the range, and LG suggests about 4 °C (39 to 40 °F) if food is freezing at the 3 °C default. Change one step at a time and wait 24 hours before changing again.

Why do only the crisper drawers freeze?

LG says crispers freeze when the fridge is set too low or when the vents at the bottom of the fresh-food section, which lead to the freezer, are blocked. Clear those vents first.

Can the freezer setting make the fridge too cold?

Yes. Whirlpool says a freezer set far below −18 °C (0 °F) can push extra cold air into the fresh-food section, because the two share air. Check both settings, not just the fridge dial.

Why is my fridge colder in winter?

Whirlpool notes that a very cold room, such as a garage, changes how the fridge cycles, and Samsung gives a supported room range of 10 °C to 43 °C. A fridge in an unheated garage or porch in an Ottawa winter can fall outside that.

Is it the thermostat if food still freezes after I change the setting?

It may be. LG says a sensor reading incorrectly is one possibility once settings and vents are ruled out. A technician confirms it by comparing the sensor with a real temperature reading before replacing anything.
