Dishwasher not starting

Not urgent A dishwasher that will not start is an inconvenience, not a hazard, unless it went dead after a leak or a burning smell, in which case leave it off and book.

What this symptom might mean

Split this into two cases. If the panel lights up but nothing happens when you press Start, the dishwasher is usually waiting for something: the control lock is on, a delay start is counting down, the door is not fully latched (a lower rack put in backwards can stop it), demo mode is active, or the water supply is off and the unit refuses to run dry. GE also notes that some models with leak protection will lock out after detecting water in the base. Those are settings and conditions, not failures.

If the panel is completely dark, look at power: the breaker, the outlet or the hard-wired junction box under the sink, and on some models a thermal fuse on the control that opens after a heat or moisture event. A door switch that has worn, a touchpad that no longer registers, or a control board that has failed sit behind those, and are what the technician tests once the simple causes are ruled out.

Stop and call if: Burning smell from the control panel or under the door; Water in the base pan or a leak-protection alert; Breaker trips when the dishwasher is switched on.

Safe checks you can do first

  1. Control lock. Look for a padlock icon or LOCK light. The manual gives the button to hold, usually three seconds. Do the same for any Delay Start or Sabbath/demo mode that is showing.
  2. Door latch and racks. Push the door until it clicks. Make sure the lower rack is the right way round and nothing tall is stopping the door from closing fully.
  3. Water supply. Confirm the valve under the sink is open. Some models will not begin a cycle without water pressure.
  4. Power. Check the breaker. If the dishwasher plugs into an outlet under the sink, plug a lamp into it. If the outlet is switched (some kitchens wire the dishwasher and disposer to a wall switch), make sure the switch is on.
  5. Reset. Turn the breaker off for one minute and back on, or unplug for a minute. Then try a short cycle.
  6. Water in the base. If a leak-protection message shows or you hear the drain pump running with the door open, water may be in the base pan. Shut the supply valve and book; do not tip the dishwasher.

Nothing above involves gas, wiring, refrigerant or removing panels. Those are technician-only: Opening the door panel to reach the latch, touchpad or control; Any electrical test at the junction box or on the control board; Removing the kick plate to inspect the base pan and float.

Repairs a technician may recommend

After inspection, not from the symptom alone.

  • Door latch or door switch replacement. When the latch feels loose or the control does not register the door as closed.
  • Touchpad or user interface replacement. When some buttons work and others do not, or Start needs several presses.
  • Control board replacement. When the panel is dead with power confirmed at the junction box, or the board has a visible burn. The finding weighs this against the age of the dishwasher.
  • Thermal fuse replacement. When the fuse on the control has opened; the technician also looks for the overheating or moisture that caused it.
  • Float switch or leak sensor service. When the unit is locked out by water in the base; the leak is found and fixed first.
  • Wiring or junction-box repair. When the connection under the sink has failed. Work on the household circuit itself is for a licensed electrician.

When to book

Book if the panel is dark with a live breaker and outlet, if Start does nothing after the lock and delay settings are cleared and the door is latched, or if the dishwasher shows a leak or fault code. Tell us the code if there is one and whether the unit is plugged in or hard-wired. The diagnostic is $89, waived if you go ahead with the repair. Error-code meanings for common brands are collected on appliance error-code guides, and dishwasher repair covers the visit.

Questions

The lights are on but Start does nothing. What should I try first?

Hold the lock button (often marked with a padlock) for three seconds, make sure no delay start is set, and push the door firmly until it clicks. Those three account for many calls that end without a repair.

The dishwasher went dead after a power outage. Is the board gone?

Not necessarily. Reset the breaker and give it a minute. If it stays dark with power confirmed at the outlet, a fuse or the board may have been damaged by the surge, and that needs a test.

It hums or the pump runs but the cycle never starts. Why?

Some models drain first, and will keep draining if the float or leak sensor thinks there is water in the base. Shut the supply valve and book; a leak is more likely than a control fault.

Is replacing a control board worth it?

Often yes on a dishwasher under about ten years with a sound tub and pump; the written finding gives both numbers. On a budget model near the end of its life, we say so.
