Whirlpool dishwasher error codes

The codes below come from Whirlpool's product-help site, whose pages link to service in both the United States and Canada. Whirlpool says exact codes vary by model, so check the owner's manual or control guide for your model number before acting on a code. KitchenAid's help site publishes the same code list in the same words; both are Whirlpool Corporation brands, and our KitchenAid dishwasher page covers the flash patterns in more detail.

Reading a flashing Clean light. Whirlpool says to count the first burst of flashes (the F number), watch for a short pause of about 1 to 2 seconds, count the second burst (the E number), then wait for a longer pause of about 5 seconds before the pattern repeats. Seven flashes, a pause and one flash is F7E1. Note the code before you reset anything, because a reset may clear it from the display.

Whirlpool's power reset. Unplug the dishwasher for 30 seconds and plug it back in. If it is hard-wired, switch off its breaker at the electrical panel for 30 seconds, then switch it back on.

What's specific to Whirlpool dishwashers

Two filter designs. Whirlpool describes two styles. On Filter Style 1, turn the upper filter assembly a quarter turn counterclockwise, lift it out, gently pull the parts apart and rinse them under running water, using a soft brush for hard-water deposits, then refit it. Filter Style 2 is maintenance-free: a foreign object cup at the front, below the lower rack, protects the pump. If it fills, press the tab in its centre, pull the cup up, empty it and push it back until it locks. Some models have a Clean Filter indicator; Whirlpool resets it by holding the Clean Filter button for 3 seconds, then opening and closing the door. A blocked filter is the first thing Whirlpool lists for F9E1.

Drain installation. Several Whirlpool drain codes trace back to how the dishwasher was connected. For a new installation that drains into a garbage disposer, Whirlpool describes a test for the knockout plug: with the power off and the drain hose disconnected over a bucket, push a pencil into the disposer inlet; if it goes in about 3 in (7.5 cm), the plug is out. Whirlpool also says the drain hose needs a high loop, arching up and secured near the top of the cabinet or the underside of the counter before it meets the drain, and that the loop should be at least 20 in (50.8 cm) above the floor, or the dishwasher can siphon. Disconnecting the drain hose is plumbing work. If you would rather not, we check the installation at the visit; dishwasher installation covers new hookups.

Water supply and leaks. Whirlpool's guidance on leaks from underneath starts at the water connection: the rubber washer must be seated in the 3/4 in (19 mm) fitting of the 90-degree elbow at the valve, which is hand-tightened and then snugged a further 1/4 to 1/2 turn with pliers. Whirlpool also says suds from the wrong detergent can push water out of the dishwasher and into cabinets, and asks owners to mop up any overflow promptly. Water under the unit, or an F8E4 code, is a job for a technician.

Front status light. On Whirlpool models with a status light on the front, the colour tells you the stage: blue while washing, red while drying, white when the cycle is complete, and blinking when the cycle has paused. A blinking light means paused, which is not in itself a fault.

Routine care. Whirlpool says dishes only need to be scraped, not rinsed, before loading, and warns that detergent used on already-clean dishes can cause permanent white etching over time. It recommends cleaning the dishwasher about every 30 days.

Recalls and notices

We found no Health Canada recall of Whirlpool-brand dishwashers. On 25 September 2026 we searched the Government of Canada Recalls and safety alerts database, including its open-data export current to 24 September 2026. The Whirlpool-brand recalls listed there cover other products, such as a 2019 recall of certain Whirlpool, KitchenAid and JennAir electric radiant cooktops (recall notice).

One older dishwasher notice from the same corporate family is worth knowing about. On 3 June 2010 Health Canada posted a Maytag Corporation recall of plastic-tub dishwashers sold in Canada from February 2006 to April 2010 under the Maytag, Amana, Jenn-Air, Admiral, Magic Chef, Performa by Maytag and Crosley brands, for a heating element failure that could pose a fire hazard. It is identified by serial number and does not list Whirlpool-brand dishwashers (recall notice).

A recall is a formal safety action published by Health Canada with the manufacturer. A service bulletin is a manufacturer's repair note for technicians, and a complaint is an owner's report; neither is a recall. If you have a safety concern, search recalls-rappels.canada.ca with your model number.

When to book

Book straight away for F8E4 or F8E5, or for any water on the floor, and keep the water supply to the dishwasher off until we arrive. For drain and fill codes (F9E1, F9E2, H2O or F8E1), try Whirlpool's checks first and book if the code returns. For the control, heating, sensor, motor and diverter codes, one 30-second power reset is the only owner step; book if the code comes back. Tell us the code as displayed, or the flash count, and the model number. The diagnostic is $89 plus tax, waived when you go ahead with the repair, with a written finding and quote before any work.
