Dishwasher door won't latch or close
A dishwasher door that won't latch is usually being stopped by something before it reaches the latch.
Soon Most dishwashers won't start until the door latches, and GE warns that a door that doesn't close properly can leak.
What this symptom usually means
A dishwasher door that won't latch is usually being stopped by something before it reaches the latch. GE, Whirlpool and Samsung all start with the load: plates or utensils sticking out past the racks, something fallen through the lower rack, or a rack not pushed all the way in. GE adds that an adjustable upper rack raised on one side only will stop the door closing. Whirlpool says silverware or food caught between the door seal and the tub has the same effect. On a new dishwasher, GE says the door gasket is stiff at first; you may need to push on the top centre of the door while latching, and it can take up to ten cycles for the gasket to soften.
If the door is clear, installation is next. GE says a door that hits the cabinets or the screws under the counter won't close properly, and Whirlpool says the dishwasher must be level, flat on the floor and square in the cabinet opening. A crooked door can mean it has come off one hinge, according to GE. Some newer models open the door on purpose at the end of a cycle to help drying: Samsung's AutoRelease extends rods that stop the door closing for a while, and Whirlpool says some models won't fully close after a cycle until the door is pushed and the power cycled. Past that, Whirlpool and Samsung name a damaged latch, and Whirlpool lists door spring tension.
Checks you can do yourself
- Check the load and racksMake sure nothing sticks out past the racks, nothing has fallen through the lower rack, and both racks roll fully in. GE and Samsung both list these first.
- Level the upper rackIf the upper rack adjusts, GE says it should be raised or lowered on both sides together, never one side only.
- Clear the seal areaWhirlpool says to check for silverware or debris caught between the door seal and the tub, and to remove large food particles around the seal.
- Push the top centre on a new dishwasherGE says a new gasket can be stiff, so press on the top centre of the door while latching. It softens over about ten cycles.
- Wait out, or turn off, auto-openIf rods or the door open on their own after a cycle, Samsung says AutoRelease can be turned off in the settings. Whirlpool suggests pushing the door closed and switching the power off and on if it won't fully close after a cycle.
- Look at the latch and the door edgesSamsung says an undamaged latch shows a visible spring and locking arm when the door is open. Close the door slowly and watch whether the sides or top touch the cabinets, as GE describes. A door that looks crooked may be off a hinge.

How it differs by design
- Auto-open drying: Samsung's AutoRelease cracks the door open at the end of a cycle and can be turned off in the settings. Whirlpool describes a similar open-door drying function on some models.
- Top-control (hidden control) models have the latch and controls along the top edge of the door, so a misaligned door often shows as a latch that catches on one side only.
- Panel-ready dishwashers carry a custom cabinet door. Whirlpool says spring tension should be set before installation; a heavy panel with the springs set for a light one can make the door drop or refuse to stay closed.
- After a kitchen renovation: new flooring or a new countertop changes the opening. GE and Whirlpool both point to a door hitting the cabinets or a dishwasher not square in the cabinet.
