Dryer shutting off mid-cycle
Urgent A dryer that keeps stopping is often protecting itself from overheating, and the restriction that causes overheating is also a lint fire risk, so treat repeat shut-offs as urgent.
What this symptom might mean
Some mid-cycle stops are by design. Sensor cycles end when the dryer decides the load is dry, and a small load that never touches the moisture bars can make the dryer stop within minutes. Quick and timed cycles are short on purpose. Whirlpool and LG both list these first, along with a door that popped open and a momentary power interruption.
The stops to worry about are the thermal ones. If the dryer runs, gets hot, shuts off and then will not restart until it cools, a high-limit thermostat or the motor's internal overload may be tripping. That almost always means air is not moving: a clogged vent, a blocked wall cap or a stalled blower. Less often it is a failing motor, a worn start switch, a loose power connection or a control board fault. Because the thermal case involves the same restriction that starts lint fires, it needs a proper look rather than repeated restarts.
Safe checks you can do first
- Cycle type and load size. Pick a sensor cycle such as Normal and fill the drum at least a third. On a very small load, add a couple of damp towels so the sensor has something to read. Wipe the metal sensor bars inside the drum with a little rubbing alcohol to remove softener film.
- Door latch. Close the door firmly and see whether the drum light goes off. A latch that has worn will let the door drift open under vibration and stop the cycle.
- Airflow. Clean the lint screen, straighten the duct behind the dryer and check that the outside flap opens when the dryer runs. If the cabinet top is hot to the touch, stop and book.
- Power. Check the breaker. A half-tripped double breaker on an electric dryer can let the motor run and drop out intermittently. Confirm the outlet is not on a switch or timer.
- Reset. Unplug for one minute, then restart. If the dryer will not power on at all afterwards, note that; it points to a fuse or control.
- Timing. Note how long it runs before stopping and whether it restarts right away or only after cooling. Immediate restart suggests settings or door; cool-down first suggests overheating.
Nothing above involves gas, wiring, refrigerant or removing panels. Those are technician-only: Testing thermostats, fuses, the motor or the terminal block; Opening the cabinet to reach the blower or heater; Any gas-side component on a gas dryer.

- Vent and blower cleaning. When the dryer is overheating and shutting down. Often the whole fix, combined with a check of the thermostats it has been stressing.
- High-limit thermostat, cycling thermostat or thermal fuse replacement. When a thermostat has drifted or a fuse has opened. The technician fixes the airflow cause at the same time or the part will fail again.
- Door switch or latch replacement. When the door drifts open or the switch cuts out under vibration.
- Motor replacement. When the motor's overload trips after a few minutes even with clear airflow.
- Start switch, relay or control board replacement. When the dryer stops randomly with no heat pattern and restarts immediately.
- Power cord or terminal block repair. When a loose connection at the 240 V terminal block is found; signs include a warm plug or scorched terminals. Electric work only.
When to book
Book right away if the dryer stops hot and only runs again after cooling; that pattern is the one that needs the vent, blower and thermostats checked together. Book also if a sensor cycle still quits with damp clothes after you have cleaned the sensor bars and used a larger load, or if the dryer stops at random and the door latch is sound. Questions
My dryer stops after five minutes with wet clothes. Is it broken?
Not necessarily. On a sensor cycle with a small load, the dryer may decide the load is dry because nothing is touching the sensor. Try a fuller load or a timed cycle. If it also stops on timed cycles, book a visit.
Why does it restart only after it cools down?
That is the classic sign of a thermal cut-out. Something is letting the dryer overheat, usually restricted airflow. It needs the cause found, not just the part replaced.
Is a dryer that shuts itself off dangerous?
The shut-off itself is a safety feature working. What it is reacting to, often a lint-restricted vent, is the fire risk. Stop using it until the cause is found.
Could it be the breaker rather than the dryer?
It can be. A weak or half-tripped double breaker on an electric dryer can cut power under load. If the breaker is warm or trips repeatedly, that side needs a licensed electrician.
