Microwave not working, dead or stopping
A microwave that looks dead may not be faulty.
Not urgent A microwave that will not start is an inconvenience, but one that smells of burning, trips the breaker, or has a damaged door should stay unplugged until it is checked.
What this symptom usually means
A microwave that looks dead may not be faulty. GE notes that some models have a Display On/Off setting or a power-saver mode that blanks the clock, and that its Café over-the-range models and Advantium ovens made after June 2016 do not show the time continuously by design. Whirlpool lists an Energy Save mode that puts the control to sleep, a Control Lock that disables the keypad, a Demo mode that runs the light and fan without heating, a kitchen timer counting down instead of a cook cycle, and simply not pressing Start. A countertop unit plugged into an inverter or a generator may not run properly; Whirlpool says to use a wall outlet. If there is truly no power, the outlet, the breaker or a fuse is next.
A microwave that starts and then stops mid-cycle points elsewhere. The door is one possibility: an oversized plate or packing material can stop it closing fully, and Samsung Canada lists door-open errors among its codes. Overheating is another; Samsung lists an over-temperature error. Past those checks, the possibilities are internal: a door interlock switch, an internal fuse or thermal cutoff, or the control board. Those are for a technician only. Health Canada says not to disable or tamper with a microwave's safety interlocks, and GE warns that the high-voltage capacitor inside can hold a dangerous charge after the plug is pulled.
Checks you can do yourself
- Is the display just off?Press a key or open the door. If the display wakes up, it was in a display-off, power-saver or Energy Save mode (GE, Whirlpool). Your manual says how to change it.
- Outlet and breakerFor a countertop unit, plug a lamp or another small appliance into the same outlet. For an over-the-range or built-in unit, check the breaker or fuse. Whirlpool says to call an electrician if the outlet itself is dead.
- Wall outlet onlyPlug a countertop microwave directly into a wall outlet, not an extension cord, power bar, inverter or generator (Whirlpool).
- Lock, demo and timerLook for a lock symbol and turn Control Lock off. Make sure Demo mode is off. If a timer is counting down, press Cancel; Whirlpool notes the kitchen timer does not run the microwave. Then set a cycle and press Start.
- DoorRemove anything that stops the door closing, including packing material or a plate that is too large, and close it firmly (Whirlpool). If the door is bent, loose or will not latch, stop and book.
- KeypadSamsung Canada suggests unplugging, wiping the control panel with a damp microfibre cloth, letting it dry, and using a bare fingertip on touch keys. Do not press hard.
- Power resetUnplug the microwave, or switch off its breaker, for one minute, then restore power and watch for a code (Whirlpool, Samsung). Write down any code you see.
Nothing above involves gas, wiring, refrigerant or removing panels.
What you notice, and what it can point to
Listed in no particular order. They help you describe the problem; only an inspection confirms the fault.
Completely dark: no display, light or fan
Could point to: No power at the outlet, a tripped breaker or blown fuse, or an internal fault
Next step: Test the outlet with a lamp, check the breaker; book if power is there
Clock blank, wakes up when a key is pressed
Could point to: Display-off, power-saver or Energy Save mode (GE, Whirlpool)
Next step: Normal; change the setting if you want the clock shown
Display on but it will not start
Could point to: Control Lock, Demo mode, a running timer, or Start not pressed (Whirlpool)
Next step: Turn off the lock and demo, cancel the timer, set a cycle and press Start
Keys do not respond, or activate on their own
Could point to: Dirty keypad, lock on, or a control fault (Samsung)
Next step: Clean the panel, use a bare fingertip, reset; unplug and book if keys self-activate
Starts, then stops mid-cycle with a code
Could point to: Door or over-temperature error (Samsung)
Next step: Check the door closes fully; unplug for 60 seconds; book if it returns
Door does not close properly or feels loose
Could point to: Latch, hinge or interlock problem
Next step: Stop using it (Health Canada) and book
How it differs by design
Countertop. Plugs into a wall outlet you can test with a lamp. Whirlpool warns against running it from an inverter or generator. It is the easiest type to replace, which affects whether a repair makes sense.
Over-the-range. Its outlet may be out of reach in the cabinetry, so the breaker is the practical reset. It also carries the cooktop vent fan and lights, and GE notes some of its over-the-range models do not show the clock continuously by design. If the fan and lights work but the microwave will not start, the control side is powered.
Built-in, drawer and speed-cook. These are fitted into cabinetry and may be hard-wired. Whirlpool notes an Energy Save mode on some built-ins that makes the display look dead. Speed-cook ovens such as GE's Advantium combine microwave and oven functions, so their codes and settings differ; use the manual for your model.
What our technician checks
These need panels off, live electrical tests or a licensed trade, so they are left to the technician:
- Removing the outer cabinet or control panel for any reason
- Testing or replacing door interlock switches, fuses, thermal cutoffs or the control board
- Anything near the high-voltage capacitor, transformer, diode or magnetron
- Disconnecting or reconnecting a hard-wired built-in unit
Waived when you go ahead with the repair. You get the cause, the price and our repair-or-replace verdict in writing before any work.
Repairs a technician may recommend
After inspection, not from the symptom alone.
Door interlock switch replacement
When the door closes properly but the control does not see it as closed, or the microwave stops when the door is touched. Technician only.
Internal fuse or thermal cutoff replacement
When the microwave is dead with power at the outlet. The technician finds out why the fuse or cutoff opened before replacing it.
Control board or keypad replacement
When the display is dead or the keys do not respond with power confirmed, or keys activate by themselves.
Door latch or hinge repair
When the door does not close squarely or the latch hooks are worn or broken.
Cooling fan or vent fan repair
When an over-temperature shut-off keeps recurring. On over-the-range units the vent fan is part of the microwave.
Replacement recommendation
When the unit is a lower-value countertop model or the part is unavailable. We say so from the model number before a visit where we can.
Brands we see with this problem
Codes, parts and access differ by brand; the brand pages cover where the model label is and what to expect.
Cost, and whether to fix it
What the repair costs depends on the part, the labour and whether a second visit is needed for an ordered part; the written finding gives the total before any work. Our guides on what drives repair costs and repair versus replacement explain how to weigh it.
When to book
Book when there is power at the outlet or breaker and the microwave is still dead; when the display stays dark after a reset; when it keeps stopping mid-cycle or shows a door or temperature code; or when the door does not close properly. Tell us the type (countertop, over-the-range, built-in or drawer), the brand and model, and any code. For a countertop unit, send the model number first and we will tell you whether a visit makes sense. The diagnostic is $89 (+tax), waived if you go ahead, and the written finding shows the repair against replacement. See microwave repair. If it runs but does not heat, see microwave runs but doesn't heat.

Microwave not working, dead or stopping: questions
The clock is blank but everything else works. Is it broken?
Probably not. GE says some models have a display-off or power-saver setting, and its Café over-the-range and Advantium models made after June 2016 do not show the clock continuously. Whirlpool has an Energy Save mode that does the same.
The light and fan come on but it will not start cooking.
Check Control Lock, Demo mode and the kitchen timer, and press Start after setting the cycle (Whirlpool). If it starts but does not heat, that is a different fault; see the microwave-not-heating guide.
My microwave stops partway through.
Check nothing is keeping the door from closing fully. Samsung Canada lists door-open and over-temperature error codes among its microwave codes. Reset it by unplugging for 60 seconds; if it keeps stopping, book.
Can I check or bypass the door switches myself?
No. Health Canada says not to disable or tamper with a microwave's safety interlocks, and GE warns the high-voltage capacitor can hold a dangerous charge after unplugging. Door switches are technician work.
Is my countertop microwave worth repairing?
It depends on the model and the fault. Send us the model number and a description, and we will say before you book whether a visit is likely to make sense.
