Microwave buttons or touchpad not working
When a microwave's display is on but the buttons don't respond, check the settings before assuming a fault.
Not urgent Unresponsive buttons are an inconvenience; a microwave that starts on its own or runs with the door open is not, and should be unplugged.
What this symptom usually means
When a microwave's display is on but the buttons don't respond, check the settings before assuming a fault. LG, Samsung and Whirlpool all describe a child or control lock that disables the keypad; LG says holding Start/Enter for about four seconds switches its lock on or off, and the lock icon or an L shows in the display. GE says an unfinished program, such as a delay start, can make the touch panel unresponsive, and lists making sure the clock is set. Samsung notes that its touch panels need a bare fingertip with enough contact, and that a damp or dirty panel may not detect your finger.
If the lock is off and the panel is clean, a power reset often clears a frozen control. GE says to unplug the microwave or turn off its breaker for 30 seconds, Samsung says 60 seconds, Whirlpool one minute, and LG two to three minutes. After a summer storm or a flicker in the power, that reset is worth trying first. If only some buttons work, or Samsung's warning sign applies, where buttons only respond when pressed very hard, the keypad (the touch membrane) or its connection to the control board is the likely cause. A panel that stays unresponsive after a reset needs a technician. If the display is blank as well, see microwave not working.
Checks you can do yourself
- Look for a lockCheck the display for a padlock, Lock or L. LG says to hold Start/Enter for about four seconds to toggle its lock. Whirlpool and Samsung say to follow the manual for your model.
- Clear any unfinished programPress Stop/Clear. GE says a delay-start or other unfinished sequence can make the panel unresponsive.
- Set the clockGE lists making sure the clock is set, since some models wait for it after a power cut.
- Clean and dry the panelSamsung suggests wiping the panel with a damp cloth, drying it, and pressing with a bare fingertip. Don't spray cleaner directly on the panel.
- Reset the powerUnplug the microwave, or switch off its breaker for an over-the-range model. GE says 30 seconds, Samsung 60 seconds, Whirlpool one minute and LG two to three minutes. Plug it back in and try again.
- Check the doorClose the door firmly and try Start again. A door that isn't latching may stop a cycle starting even when the buttons are working.
Nothing above involves gas, wiring, refrigerant or removing panels.
What you notice, and what it can point to
Listed in no particular order. They help you describe the problem; only an inspection confirms the fault.
No buttons respond, lock icon or L in the display
Could point to: Child or control lock on
Next step: Release the lock as your manual shows
Panel froze after a power flicker
Could point to: Control needs a reset
Next step: Unplug or switch off the breaker for a minute or more
Glass touch panel ignores light taps
Could point to: Damp or dirty panel, or not enough finger contact
Next step: Clean and dry it; use a bare fingertip
Only some buttons work, or need a hard press
Could point to: Worn keypad membrane
Next step: Book; the keypad may need replacing
Buttons beep but Start does nothing
Could point to: Door not latching, or a door switch fault
Next step: Close the door firmly; book if it continues
Display blank as well
Could point to: Power or control fault
Next step: See microwave not working
How it differs by design
- Membrane keypads (printed or slightly raised buttons you feel click) wear with use. The most-used pads, often Start, +30 seconds and the numbers, tend to fail first.
- Capacitive glass touch panels sense your finger rather than pressure. Samsung says they need bare-finger contact and a clean, dry surface.
- Over-the-range microwaves are usually plugged in inside the cabinet above, so the reset is done at the breaker. Steam and grease from the cooktop below reach the control panel, so keep it wiped.
- Built-in and wall-oven microwaves: Whirlpool's reset for its built-in models is turning off the breaker for one minute.
What our technician checks
These need panels off, live electrical tests or a licensed trade, so they are left to the technician:
- Removing the control panel or cabinet (the high-voltage capacitor can hold a charge after unplugging)
- Removing an over-the-range microwave from the wall
- Testing the keypad, control board or door switches

Repairs a technician may recommend
After inspection, not from the symptom alone.
Touchpad (membrane keypad) replacement
When some buttons work and others don't, or buttons only respond when pressed very hard, which Samsung says needs service.
Control board replacement
When the keypad tests fine but the board doesn't respond, or the display shows errors after a reset.
Ribbon cable reconnection
When the connector between the keypad and the board has loosened, which can make the whole panel dead.
Door switch diagnosis
When the buttons respond but Start won't begin a cycle with the door closed.
Brands we see with this problem
Codes, parts and access differ by brand; the brand pages cover where the model label is and what to expect.
Cost, and whether to fix it
What the repair costs depends on the part, the labour and whether a second visit is needed for an ordered part; the written finding gives the total before any work. Our guides on what drives repair costs and repair versus replacement explain how to weigh it.
When to book
Book if the lock is off, the panel is clean and dry, a power reset hasn't helped, and the buttons still don't respond, or if only some of them work. Tell us which buttons fail and whether the display shows anything. For a countertop microwave, weigh the repair against a new one; our written finding includes the repair-or-replace verdict. The visit is $89, waived if you go ahead with the repair. Microwave repair explains what the diagnosis covers.

Microwave buttons or touchpad not working: questions
How do I unlock my microwave?
It depends on the brand. LG says to hold Start/Enter for about four seconds until the lock indicator changes. Whirlpool and Samsung say to follow the manual for your model, since the button varies.
Why do only some buttons on my microwave work?
When some buttons respond and others don't, the touchpad membrane or its connection is often worn. It's a common repair on over-the-range and built-in models.
How do I reset my microwave?
Unplug it, or switch off its breaker if it's over the range, and wait. GE says 30 seconds, Samsung 60 seconds, Whirlpool one minute and LG two to three minutes. Then plug it back in and set the clock.
Why won't my microwave start when I press Start?
Check for a control lock, an unfinished program and a door that isn't fully latched. If the other buttons beep but Start does nothing after a reset, the Start pad or a door switch may be at fault.
Why did my microwave touchpad stop working after I cleaned it?
Samsung says a damp panel may not detect your finger, so dry it fully and try again with a bare fingertip. Holding a pad while wiping can also switch on the control lock on some models; check the display for a lock symbol.
Is it worth replacing a microwave keypad?
On an over-the-range or built-in microwave it often is. On a low-cost countertop model the labour may approach the price of a new one. The written finding gives the price and our verdict first.
