What this symptom usually means
A microwave turntable that won't turn is most often sitting wrong, switched off, or blocked. GE lists a turntable on/off feature that has been turned off by accident, a glass tray that isn't centred and seated on its drive, a tray upside down so it drags, food or debris under the wheels of the roller ring, and pressing a timer function instead of a cook function. Samsung adds a roller ring that is missing or out of place, a coupler at the centre that isn't connecting to the motor, a dish so large it touches the walls, and a load heavy enough to drag. On a new microwave, Whirlpool says to check that all the protective material and tape have been removed from the tray and hub.
If the tray is seated, the ring is clean and in place, the feature is on and it still doesn't turn, the likely causes are the turntable motor, a worn coupler or drive, or the circuit that powers the motor. Whirlpool says replacing a turntable motor should be left to a professional. On most microwaves the motor is reached by opening the cabinet, and the high-voltage parts inside can hold a dangerous charge even when unplugged. - Check the turntable settingIf your model has a turntable on/off button, make sure it isn't turned off. GE and Whirlpool both list this first.
- Seat the trayLift the glass tray out and put it back right side up, centred on the coupler. GE warns that an upside-down tray drags on the floor of the cavity.
- Check and clean the roller ringMake sure the roller ring is in place. Samsung suggests washing the tray, ring and roller track with warm soapy water; GE says food under the wheels can stop the tray.
- Check the couplerLook at the drive piece in the centre of the floor. Samsung says it must connect to the motor. If it's cracked or loose, note it for the technician.
- Check the dish and loadSamsung says a container that touches the side walls, or too much food, can stop or drag the tray.
- Use a cook functionGE says to make sure you're starting a cook cycle, not the kitchen timer, which runs without turning the tray.
- Remove packing on a new unitWhirlpool says to remove all protective material and any tape from the turntable and hub.

How it differs by design
- Over-the-range microwaves: many have a turntable on/off button so large or side-by-side dishes can be used. Whirlpool says to check the manual for how to turn it back on.
- Countertop microwaves: the tray sits on a roller ring and a coupler. Samsung says the turntable won't operate without both the ring and the tray in place.
- Wall-oven combination microwaves: Whirlpool has a separate guide for turntables in its wall-oven microwaves; tray and ring checks are the same.
- Direction: Whirlpool says a turntable can rotate in either direction, so a change of direction between uses is normal.
