Dryer overheating or smelling of burning
When a dryer runs too hot, the first thing manufacturers tell you to check is airflow.
Urgent Heat and lint together are a fire risk; the City of Toronto's fire-safety guidance names lack of dryer maintenance as a leading cause of dryer fires in homes.
What this symptom usually means
When a dryer runs too hot, the first thing manufacturers tell you to check is airflow. Hot, wet air has to leave through the lint screen, the duct and the outside hood. If any of them is restricted, the heat stays in the drum and cabinet. Whirlpool lists the signs of a blocked vent: long drying times, a cabinet that is very warm to the touch, steam or condensation in the drum, water behind the dryer, and very little lint on the screen. It names lint buildup, animal nests or debris at the outside hood, and kinked or badly installed duct as causes. In an Ottawa or Gatineau winter, snow belongs on that list; Whirlpool includes it among the things that can block the outside hood. GE says a lint build-up in the venting can give off a burning or musty smell.
Settings play a part as well. Whirlpool says Timed Dry runs for the full time you set, which can over-dry a load, while automatic cycles sense dryness and stop. Samsung warns that high heat can scorch synthetics such as rayon. If airflow and settings are fine, the dryer's own temperature controls may be at fault. Maytag says a faulty thermostat gives poor temperature control, and the thermal fuse is there to cut the motor if the dryer overheats. A new dryer is the exception: GE and Samsung both say a burning smell on first use is normal oil and dust burning off, and suggest running it empty for 15 to 20 minutes.
Checks you can do yourself
- Stop and cool downIf you smell burning, stop the cycle. Samsung says that if a burning smell continues after checking the lint screen, vent and settings, turn the dryer off at the breaker and request service.
- Clean the lint screenClean it after every load, as Whirlpool and the City of Toronto both advise. Check it isn't torn, loose or missing; Toronto says not to run a dryer with a damaged or clogged lint filter.
- Check the outside hoodWith the dryer running, go outside and check the vent flap opens and air flows out. Clear snow, leaves or nests from around the hood.
- Look at the duct behind the dryerMake sure it isn't crushed, kinked or pushed flat against the wall. Toronto recommends rigid or flexible metal duct and says plastic or foil duct is more prone to kinking and crushing, and plastic is also more prone to ignition. Whirlpool says outdoor venting should be cleaned every one to two years, or sooner if drying slows.
- Review the settingsUse an automatic (sensor) cycle rather than a long Timed Dry, and follow garment labels. Samsung warns high heat can scorch synthetics.
- Condenser and heat-pump modelsClean the lint filters before each load and clean the condenser as the manual shows; LG says not to run the dryer with the condenser removed, dirty or damaged.
- What not to dryToronto's guidance says not to dry items soaked in oil, wax, solvents or gasoline, even after washing, or rubber and foam items.

How it differs by design
- Electric and gas vented dryers push hot, moist air outdoors through a duct. The duct run, its bends and the outside hood are where most of the checks on this page apply.
- Gas dryers add a burner. GE says a yellow flame instead of blue with a slight yellow tip can cause a slight gas odour and needs service. Toronto's fire-safety guidance asks for a carbon monoxide alarm in homes with a natural gas or propane dryer. Any burner or gas work is for a certified gas contractor.
- Condenser and heat-pump dryers have no outdoor vent. LG says they remove moisture through a condenser, which should be cleaned 3 or 4 times a year or when the Clean Condenser light blinks, and that the lint filter should be cleaned before each use. Natural Resources Canada describes heat-pump dryers as recirculating heat while removing moisture. On these models, the filters and condenser take the place of the vent in the checks below.

- Removing panels to clean lint from inside the cabinet or around the heater or burner
- Testing or replacing thermostats, thermal fuses or heating elements
- Bypassing a thermal fuse or high-limit device, which must never be done
- Anything on the gas burner, valve or connection (a certified gas contractor)

Repairs a technician may recommend
After inspection, not from the symptom alone.
Vent and duct restoration
When the duct is crushed, kinked, plastic or foil, or the hood is blocked. Replacing the connector with metal duct and clearing the dryer end can restore airflow. A long run through the house may need a dryer-vent cleaning service.
Internal lint removal
When lint has built up inside the cabinet around the heater or burner. Toronto says the inside of the cabinet should be cleaned as the manufacturer instructs; that can mean removing panels, which is technician work.
Thermostat or temperature-sensor replacement
When airflow is good but the dryer still runs too hot. Maytag says a faulty thermostat gives poor temperature control.
Thermal fuse replacement
When the fuse has blown from overheating. Maytag says it cannot be reset. Replacing it without fixing the airflow only repeats the problem.
Gas burner service

When to book
Book as soon as you can if the dryer is hot to the touch with a clean lint screen and a clear outside hood, if clothes come out scorched on a normal setting, or if a burning smell returns. Is it normal for a dryer to be hot on the outside?
Warm, yes. Whirlpool lists a cabinet that is very warm to the touch, especially on the sides and near the bottom, as a sign of a restricted vent. If it's hot enough to be uncomfortable, stop using it and check the venting.
How often should the dryer vent be cleaned?
Whirlpool says outdoor venting should be cleaned every one to two years, or sooner if drying slows down. Toronto's fire-safety guidance says to clean the lint screen after every load and remove lint from ducts and vents regularly.
My new dryer smells like burning. Is that dangerous?
GE and Samsung both say a burning smell on first use is normal as oils and dust burn off. They suggest running it empty for 15 to 20 minutes. If the smell continues, or there is smoke, stop and book.
Can I use the plastic or foil duct that came with my old dryer?
The City of Toronto recommends rigid or flexible metal duct and says plastic and foil are more prone to kinking and crushing, and plastic to ignition. Check your dryer's installation instructions for what it allows.
Does a condenser or heat-pump dryer have the same fire risk?
It has no outdoor vent, but it still needs clean filters and a clean condenser. LG says not to run a condenser dryer with the condenser removed, dirty or damaged, and to clean the lint filter before each load.
